Country mouse Van Heflin accepts a position at his firm's NYC headquarters only to find that the company's ruthless CEO has marked him to oust an aging, old school vice president. Terrific acting by Everett Sloane and Ed Begley as the CEO and the exec -- supporting performances don't come much better. The granite Heflin, a fine actor whose star has since been eclipsed by more celebrated contemporaries, imbued any part he played with character and solidity, and his role in Patterns is no exception. Rod Serling expanded the incisive screenplay from his script for the TV version that starred Richard Kiley. Sloane, one of the best character actors of his day, is best known as Charles Foster Kane's toady in Citizen, a part on the opposite pole of the amoral shark that he plays here.
