The psionic force of nature known only as Onslaught sprang forth from the fractured psyche of mutant mentor Charles Xavier and the genetic terrorist called Magneto. Powered by his progenitors' rage, Onslaught laid siege to humanity -- touching off a cataclysmic conflict destined to deprive a world of its most revered icons!

Running from June to October 1996, Onslaught went from taking on the X-Men to attacking the whole Marvel Universe. It was used to relaunch several characters (Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and more) into a brand new Heroes Reborn universe, by the hot shot creators who would later found Image Comics.

It seems worth pointing out that Image was founded in 1992, 4 years prior to this release. So after this Marvel was actually sourcing out their characters to their old employees who had enjoyed immense popularity after striking out on their own.
