Movie info? Find it odd not to see an extras number for a Tigole release these days...

I have a 1080p plasma and i play through a Nvidia Shield TV box using the VLC app. I suppose you can use any Android box as long as it has a USB 3.0 and you use a quality USB 3.0 stick.

i think it depends on the player. the Shield is a beast. But i have a firetv stick 2.0 and I use VLC also and it will not play most 10bit encodes. I get audio but a grey or black picture. That or just a frozen screen. 8 bits work fine. I have seen documentation somewhere saying my version doesn't play more than 8 bit x265. Hopefully i can upgrade and get on that nvidia shield level like you lol.

what player do you have? I also have problems with x265. I use a fire tv stick version 2. It will only natively play 8bit x265 but not 10bits. I use the vlc app on firetv. It works pretty good most of the time. So i search out only the 8bits and skip any 10 bit versions. Like you i also tend to just get an x264 version because all of my players (smart tv, playstation, xbox, wdtv, firetv, etc) can play them all without problem.

I do know people that use plex or kodi have played 10 bit encodes but my understanding is plex and kodi are transcoding on the fly. I have had limited success with kodi and don't have a plex server either.

In the future i'm gonna upgrade to a Shield if i ever get out of other debt. It's much stronger, it actually has a youtube app unlike firetv now lol. It runs an internal plex server. That or back to Roku. But it doesn't have the kodi option and i don't know how good it is at running my local video files.

Im using a dell zino (2011) hd and kodibuntu it stutters on x265 video.

I have a tablet that has some success but obviously the movies i choose arent for me lol.

I see. I have less knowledge about what processors are capable of running x265 but i had a very old pc running windows 7. like 5 or six years older than yours and it did struggle on x265 files. The issue might simply be your processor on that zino is struggling. I have a mac laptop with a stronger i5 processor, about 2 years old and it has no issues not that you care.

Curious. Why is everything in HEVC/265 now? Rarely do you find movies in 264/MPEG

[-] suckmywaifu | 10 points | Mar 14 2018 18:23:09

better compression and lower file sizes. its quickly becoming the new standard as i download everything in x265 if possible

Problem with X264 is that it doesn't play on any devices. TVs, Phones, PS4s, X box and etc

permalink

[-] suckmywaifu | 3 points | Mar 14 2018 18:48:33

im presuming you meant x265 and newer devices tend to support it as my 4k smart tv does. before i got it i just used my pc to play my files as compatibility was never a problem on that platform

[-] itstaylorx | 1 points | Mar 14 2018 19:23:55

yep, if you have devices that like didn't come out in the last year you may struggle. i have this problem. firetv is the only device i have that plays it and only certain encodings.

That's why I just run everything through Handbrake afterward since I watch on an old Apple TV which doesn't support h.265. Small downloads + compatibility.

but why would watch anything on these devices?

x265 plays good with 30% CPU usage. so i dont see why i shouldnt use x265.

I think we're in one of those time periods where the encoding gods that sit upon high and decide what the encoders use has just decided this is the direction they are going to go in the future. Sort of like when people all of a sudden started encoding everything in mkv containers before most players would play them. I remember luckily, just remuxing everything to mp4 files because it played on my players.

I do know said below that it has better compression and some companies, i think Netflix, Hulu, etc that stream HD are using it or starting to use it because they can get a high quality hd stream but send far less data over their pipes.

That said i do see x264 encodings here but often i have to just search for the name. And often you have to get the files as soon as they hit bluray, get encoded before they get taken down. I will grab some 8 bit x265s but at the moment I still tend to prefer x264 because I just want it to work and I don't care about the format. When I upgrade my player
