For anyone who hasn't seen it, this version is great. Perfect casting, terrific acting, the script is very close to the book version (almost exactly), and just maintains the surreal humor and tone of the books perfectly. The only downside is the special effects aren't great, but that's part of the package for the BBC in 1981. The animations, however, are wonderful. If you're a fan of the series you'll probably love it.

My sentiments exactly!

However, I think the poor effects actually add to the series, not detract from it. I just love this series so much, I cannot stress enough how it's the perfect it is to the correct feeling of the books. It's perfect.

But I can't stress enough that if you haven't read the books (1st book only), then this series is worthless. This only perfectly captures the spirit of the books, unlike the shit movie. So do not watch this if you haven't read the books, it will be a waste of your time!
