Commentary audio worked fine but the movie audio (English - Track 1) was a bunch of loud static/mess for the entire length. Not sure what went wrong.

Are you using VLC? If so, that's your problem. Try MPC-BE.

No problem. I'm not sure what alternatives are available for Mac. Just search for something that supports 7.1 audio and you should be good.

Just downloaded this file to check if I had the same issue, which I didn't, I've been using "Soda Player" for a while now (about 2 months now) and its been great, you should try it, I used to rely solely on "MX player" but encountered a sync problem with a very small 4k version of "The Martian" and "Soda" has been the only one to play it properly, besides if the file has the correct naming, it will find subs for you, as long as you are online. Edit:Also on Mac here.

MX Player has an issue playing back HEVC codec video files. The audio and video not syncing up happens all of the time, I've no clue how to fix it for MX Player on my phone, but Potplayer and Media Player Classic Black Edition on my desktop plays anything as usual.
