MacBook air doesn't have HDR or even 4k screen resolution. Vlc doesn't play HDR.

Just find a 1080p version

if your tv is 4k hdr capable, most probably you can play this file through the TV's usb port using a flash drive or an external hard drive. Works for my Hisense 4K HDR TV.

As I already mentioned here, everyone should ditch VLC completely because it tries to be the jack of all trades and ended up being the master of none. As you use a mac, I'd urge you to check out IINA which is a beautiful and fast media player. But yes, as /u/FosheeVFX pointed out, you'd be good with a 1080p encode.

you could give a try to Kodi Player, and VLC nightly build 4.0 or an MPV player. But i am really not sure if they handle HDR all that well. if you do try them, post the outcomes with each player here, so others can also know!

I guess I'm lucky to live in New Zealand, our ISPs don't give two shits about what someone downloads. Our country does have the Copyright (New Technologies) Amendment Act 2008, which states that if a copyright holder obtains IP data in relation to someone downloading a video etc then they can submit a request to the NZ Government to have a warning issued to the ISP and to lodge a complaint but they have to pay in order to do that. So they don't bother.

ISP doesn't care what you do unless it causes trouble for them.

Third parties will record IPs from things like torrents, then send infringement notices to the ISPs for those IPs. The ISP then punishes you so that they don't get the infringement fines.

Using a VPN would make your public IP different so the notice would be sent to your VPN provider and not your ISP which is what stops it being tied back to you.

Using things like Mega means you get it directly from them and no one else is involved, so those third parties looking for people pirating can't get any info. The best they can do is alert Mega about it and they remove the content.
