You need quite a modern processor with quad cores or hyperthreading to play such HEVC UHD media. Also, VLC is a crap player, use MPC-HC/BE which are much lightweight and better alternatives.

Definitely agree, couldn't get VLC to play any of my h265 content with hardware acceleration, while MPC does.

How do I play the movie on a TV? Is my only option to connect it to my PC via HDMI or is there a device out there, one i can move this mkv file on, with a CPU powerfull enough to play these 4k blu-rays? I'd imagine these "TV boxes" are not even close to powerfull enough.

I use an Android box running Kodi and share my Movies folder over windows file sharing and play it back on the Android box using an Ethernet cable + HDMI. It comes up at 4K resolution and even supports HDR so it's the same as it would be just watching it directly from a UHD disc.

I just downloaded a remux version of a movie (60gigs) and my PC with an i5 almost struggled to play it back (got up to 100% CPU use) on a 1080p screen using MPC-BE.

I'd never imagine one of those Android boxes could play such a demanding file at 4K to a 4K screen! Would you mind sharing what your tv box is so I can have a look at the specs I need ?

Yeah no worries I'll check the model number. It's probably because the box has hardware decoding whereas the PC has not. I'll record you a quick video to show you as well because I was kinda surprised too haha.

I use the MINIX Neo U9-H (android box) which has no problems with 4K video. As a previous person mentioned, I believe this is possible due to hardware decoding.

i'd say just stay away from everything that isn't MPC-BE. i was getting audio popping no matter what with HC when playing some UHD files and i have a fairly powerful computer (4770K @ 4.5 GHz, 980 Ti). CPU usage was insane. BE's performance is much better.

That’s true because MPC-BE makes excellent use of your GPU for playback. Thus it mitigates the choppiness and performance seems much better.

But oh well, both are really really | Megalinks MegaDB really better as compared to VLC.

How do I get mpc-be to work with HDR? Do I need to configure it with madvr like hc? Also even without HDR, its still choppy for me.. I have a gtx 1060 and a 4690k. Is the gtx 1060 not sufficient? Or is a SSD necessary?

You definitely don't need an SSD. I can watch off my HDD or even stream it over LAN to my Android box and watch it on the TV through that with full HDR.

My understanding is that cuvid forces the GPU to do all the work tho. When I play the video the player displays h/w and my GPU is definitely being used.

no, and you didn't do what i said. specific numbers are important to diagnose the problem.

try installing ffmpeg and enabling it in external filters and see how it runs. the problem is that you can't get hdr with ffmpeg.

I haven't tried your ffmpeg suggestion yet but when I play the movie my cpu is at ~14% and gpu around 35%. Edit: Not sure what I did but everything's working now with cuvid in mpc-hc. Not choppy and truehd sound and hdr are working :). Thanks for your help!

mpc-hc with madvr and a good gpu and ofcourse tv. you might need an upgraded cpu also. not sure. luckily i upgraded everything,; cpu, gpu and tv around the time hdrs came out online so everything plays fine. Vlc i do not use for 4k because it looks shitty. Movies and TV and iwth mpc-hc (madVR) they look gorgeous. Not VLC or aceplayer or powerdvd for some reason. Hopefully this helps
