now we're putting math problems inside base64's.. isn't this getting to be a little much?

If you want content to stay online, you need to worry about bots. While this won't stop a smart bot, basic bots won't translate the text to numbers and then perform a math operation also spelled out in text on those numbers. You need to create a task that only humans are good at performing which usually means solving a language based puzzle.

Alternate Ideas -- post an imgur link and ask what the picture is of.

Post 2 imgur links and ask what the two have in common.

Post a link to a reddit comment thread and ask what the longest word of the top comment is, or the first word, the last word, the first and last word.

All good ideas, I agree. My only concern with using other methods to protect links is trying to make sure there isn't a language barrier for people who don't speak English. That's why I went for things that were math based, I figured anyone who doesn't speak English can run the words through google translate to figure it out. That's why I try to be careful of captcha methods that require an understanding of specific language syntax or terminology to solve. I do like the last suggestion particularly though.

Just trying to think of ways to make easier.

permalink

[-] ForceBlade | 2 points | Jan 21 2018 23:46:39

Specifcally you want to make it easier for humans to do but harder for bots, this method used today in this post is harder for humans and NOT hard at all for bots

This may a be a bit late for a reply but my method requires pretty much All three methods that are given. Base64, Linksnap and password. encode both the Decryption Key and the snap link, put the pass word as the sub name cut "Mega" out And pretty much does the job. never had a takedown.

[-] tiiiiimmmm | 1 points | Jan 23 2018 17:14:44

Yes, I like your solution as well. The only thing I think we as a sub should reconsider is the use of the sub name for every password, in my opinion this can create a point of weakness which can be easily exploited. It's basically if everyone is using the same password then it's kinda meaningless and if a bad actor is trying to access your material they don't even have to guess. Passwords should rotate periodically.

My opinion is that we as a sub should continue to use as many different encryption/coding methods as possible, the lack of a homogeneous solution for engineering content take-downs can only help extend the life of links. Even if the individual protection methods themselves don't work the lack of one easy solution to identify content adds more human work necessary to remove this stuff, and every little obstacle helps even if it just takes one programmer to trawl the sub for the most common protection methods they need to break. Having a variety of protection methods can help discourage people from wanting to put in the time to create new tools to break those protection methods.

TL;DR I like what you're doing and want to support anyone who wants to post on this sub with however they choose to protect their links.

I understand bots and captchas, but there's a season 3 uncensored post from 3 months ago that is still up and the individual amazon rips from 4 months ago are still working. Are these bots that you're worried about really a problem?

permalink

[-] tiiiiimmmm | 5 points | Jan 20 2018 23:55:26

It's not about what content goes down, it's that content can go down and these link protection methods can potentially extend the life of the link. It's a lot of work to upload stuff and I often delete source files after doing so, only keeping the x265 set.

The difference between life or death for a public link is often dependent on avoiding bot detection. Companies usually pay people to sit on public forums like this at peak times when content goes up to try and catch stuff but after a day or so things fall off the new and hot lists and you really only find them by searching. The main thing that causes a DMCA request on an old link is if a bot autonomously searches for the content, finds a link on the page, and checks to see if a link is active. A bot may have been programmed to try multiple methods of solving captchas and language puzzles but if it try's them all and doesn't find what it's looking for it moves on.

The more popluar a link gets; the more likely it is to be taken down. You do not seem to understand.

This sub isn't -actually- the victim of botattacks.mega.com or anything, it's the popluar links being terminated by MEGA administrators from their popularity making them stand out (And being piracy). They'll check out big torrents^(literal) of traffic and sus them out only to find they're family photos and mark them OK or just forget.

They do the same thing on some mp4 files taking up their day's quota and lo and behold it's piracy, so they take those down.

It's not as complicated and victimizing as pretending this sub is the 100% reason why.

You could PM the links to users with 10000 karma+ ONLY, but if you share it to 20000 people, it'll still get taken down because it's big enough on their network graph to be caught on the radar. Most literally.

The most tragic part of all, despite all this, is that you've presented us today with a "decryption method" that is Complex for humans to solve, but piss-easy for bots to do in under a second. Making it harder for people is not the answer when a bot can do it in magnitudes less time. I can write a bot specifically for this method just to save myself the time. And if I can, someone else probably already has. Not on our side.

Would you like me to stop uploading content or would you rather follow a few simple directions? Yes I have run a network myself and understand watching traffic and yes I could also write a shell script to attack the specific things on this forum too, but again, requires human intervention and I cannot control the human element in a public forum. I know Mega folders get pulled because too because of usage but I can't stop people from downloading things that were public just to keep traffic low. I understand your point of a computer could break this easily but I really disagree that this process is too complex for a human, what took more time for you, solving (Seven Minus Seven) or writing your posts?

Edit: Victimizing is a pretty extreme word to use for me making you solve a few math problems and saying the public status of a link can contribute to it being taken down. I will have a mature discussion but not a hyperbole battle.

permalink

[-] ForceBlade | 2 points | Jan 21 2018 23:41:16

It was pretty fucking annoying tbh. But I made it.

It's feign security via obscurity though. I can write a shellscript which would check posts in this site and solve math after decoding base 64 and construct a link. Icing on the cake, then send an email to mega saying it's illegal content and to take it down. (Playing devils advocate in this scenario)

That would all take <1 second to do for a script. But it takes like a minute or two for a person.

These are getting pretty silly, and anyone who's a network administrator knows that if you see TB's worth of traffic on a file sharing server eg working at Mega and a megalink is sucking all the traffic, you sus out the directory and mark it for deletion for being piracy. This subreddit is not as big as they think in terms of being the place where people come specifically to stop piracy. The more hits somefile.ext gets, the more attention it brings to itself from their administrators regardless of what site the links are shared on.

Have the audio issues on episodes 7-10 been fixed? The AMZN and iTunes releases had audio that was too low in places which made it difficult to hear what the characters were saying.

So you're saying I should probably replace my AMZN rips ? Do you have any specific examples?

[-] MrTattyBojangles | 1 points | Jan 20 2018 17:27:21

At 4:37 in S03E09, when Rick is in the birds' nest his dialogue is kinda low and his ray gun is super loud in comparison.

It seemed the just the central audio channel for episodes 7-10 that was lower than the rest.

[-] horsodox | 1 points | Jan 20 2018 19:27:30
