This is a repost of this submission but with Return Of The Jedi added to the folder. It's difficult to get a clear backstory on how this version of the film was built as the group that started the work broke up before it was finished. Suffice it to say that this rip is sourced from scans of several original theatrical reels from 1983.
The folder contains an x265 12bit rip of the theatrical version of each of the original trilogy movies, plus their soundtracks and one epub of the combined novelization.

[edit] To clarify, this release was passed on to Harmy by the disbanded Team Negative 1. Harmy released it as-is. It has Harmy's name on it but it is not a despecialized release. There is some controversy about who did what to make this release. If you want to know more, Google it.
If it's based on despecialized edition why is it 1080p?
It's not based on despecialized edition, this is just a scan of original theatrical film prints. Would be interesting to compare the two, but from what I've gathered this one would probably be lower quality since it's faded and has all the dirt, shakiness, etc.
It's too bad the negatives were destroyed when they made the special editions.

I guarantee they exist. Lucas only said that to try to stop people asking for it.

Pretty sure I read something a few weeks ago on the front page about how some fan got a hold of the original film for each of the movies and is going to create a 4K release of the theatrical versions. I'll see if I can find the link.

So just to be clear, we’re at the point where the only legit way to watch the original theatrical versions are as bonus features in 360p vs the pirates that released it in 720p, 1080p, and soon 4K.

Here It's been in the works for over a year now...

That's probably because it takes a long time just to scan one film frame-by-frame and then have to do clean up and corrections. Then you need the space to store the images which are probably like 100-200MB each and you'll need terabytes of storage just for that.
Either that or it's been abandoned lol
Edit: Their official page was updated a few weeks ago. Looks like they're getting close!
It isn't based on the despecialized edition. I specifically said it isnt in the description.
-it's 1983
-I own a movie theater
-I get several projection reels with Return Of The Jedi on them
-the distributor tells me to destroy the reels when I'm done
-I don't
-25 years later I put those reels on eBay
-Star Wars fans buy them and scan them to make digital video files to share because Lucasfilm won't release the original movies
This is where this file comes from. It's so 'pure' it hasn't had any clean-up done to it. It is the opposite of a despecialized edition.

To preserve detail at a lower bitrate. The file's been crunched down by 75%.

Again, thanks for uploading. Do you have any examples or links to research regarding this? It seems counter to how I understand encoding. For the sake of discussion let's assume 8-bit gives you 3 shades of grey. If you re-encode to 12-bit which (let's assume) gives you 12 shades of grey you now have 9 "unused" shades of grey which are nonetheless going to have an overhead cost in terms of file size. Where does the savings come in? Maybe I need an ELI5 for this?
I am not deeply familiar with the theory behind it. What reading I have done said that the advantages are in HEVC's method of encoding (using coding units,) 10bit quality retention at low bitrates and less use of quantization compared to 8bit (greater efficiency.)
Quality retention of x264 10bit vs x265 10bit.
A pdf on "saving bandwidth" that gets mentioned a few times.

This may or may not begin to answer your question. Personally, I think x265 12bit offers an excellent picture for the file size, which is ultimately all I care about. It doesn't have to be an airtight example of perfect video encoding and I wouldn't argue that it is. It does seem like a very good choice, I prefer it and I'll use it until I decide I prefer something else.

I was wondering that too. Wasn't it 720p only?

i dont think its the despecialised edition. there are multiple groups doing similar things with the original trilogy so i think this is a different version
Anyone know a good way to convert this to H.264 on a Mac? I tried with the latest version of Handbrake but it's telling me "No Valid Source Found".
Edit: I tried the latest nightly build and got the same message.

Not sure about on a Mac, but on a PC I used ffmpeg to convert the film from HEVC to H264 - in order to make both films (I did ESB and ROTJ) more player-friendly! :)
I used the following command: ffmpeg -i inputfilename -map 0 -c:a copy -c:s copy -c:v libx264 outputfilename
ESB converted fine, however ROTJ threw up an exception issue at the very end - so I had to use mkvmerge in order to fix it.
Okay maybe I can give that a shot. I've got Bootcamp so I can run Windows 7 on my Mac. Thanks for your help.

I've just tried the link and I see this. Try it again, maybe?

I can confirm, all three films have been downloaded and work in Kodi. The VLC nightly build didn't work for me, though.
