Is this that official HD copy of Buffy that includes horrible editing? Too much zooming in, switching to widescreen showing crew members and actor replacements.

Most likely, yeah.

Thanks for sharing. They should make a Re-make of this show and NOT a Re-master, imho.

I voted up for the few people who would want this, but for anyone who wants to watch this show, just watch the SD-DVD rips.

Why?

Because they royally fucked-up the remastering. They zoomed into full-frame scenes, left crew members and lighting equipment in expanded framing, ruined the color-correction by un-tinting night scenes which now appear as daylight (not good when your show is about fucking vampires), and just generally botched the entire thing by doing a bad job with zero regard for the show. Even Joss Whedon hates it.

But why? But how?
How could they fuck up so bad? How come nobody noticed?

Literally impossible that they didn't notice, they just didn't care. It was a lazy / cheap remaster to make a quick buck off an old property. It's really a shame.

Not just that they didn't care, I think in order to do a proper re-master of this, it would have taken too much money since when, this was made, they didn't think of having a wide screen tv watching it or needing to do a re-master version of it, when they made it, they made sure things were in the right place for a 4:3 tv not for a possible 16:9 tv, so yeah, it is better to watch the DVD rip and not these.

Even when they just switched to widescreen for the DVD release, you can see stupid things. Xander's arse crack and wires pulling up that giant pole in the season 6 finale stick to memory. Buffy doesn't have a good history with remasters.

There is a list of reasons, but I will list a few that I can remember off the top of my head.
The show was shot for the 4:3 aspect ratio, so there is times where actors will be standing off to the side, who are not supposed to be in the scene, waiting to enter. Other times you will have production crew standing off to the side, so you can see people who are doing behind the scenes stuff during a scene. It wasn't color corrected, like the SD-DVDs/TV are, so there are scenes that were supposed to be dream sequences/fantasies that look like regular scenes. Other times the scene was supposed to be a night scene, but it was just shot in the daytime, and then color corrected to be night, and in the HD broadcasts those scenes are still shown as daytime. Some scenes are top and bottom cropped to have the appearance of widescreen, and other scenes are just stretched to be widescreen.
There are some other things, but I don't remember what they were, because it has been a few years since I have even thought about the HD versions of Buffy. I think only Angel season 5 was shot with the intention of being done in widescreen. So it's best to just accept Buffy and Angel as 4:3 SD shows, like Babylon 5.

They can do HD remasters, they just need to stick with the 4:3, i.e. 1440x1080 instead of 1920x1080. As other people have said it was never intended to be viewed in widescreen format and extensive digital editing would be required to remove all the elements you don't want onscreen.
