was this renamed off a different release? I've seen 2.8x and 2.9x GB versions floating around as well, so i was just curious what the differences were

The only difference is in audio, there is absolutely no difference in video. Smaller releases only include English audio at 384 kbps (5.1), this release however includes two audio tracks (French and Spanish) at 126 kbps.French and Spanish audio take about 136 MB. For some reason this release includes an English audio track at 126 kbps (~68 MB), probably added for some devices that don't support downmixing.

By doing the math you'll figure out that without additional audio tracks the file size is around 2.8 GB.
