Is anyone up to date with the series? I watched those episodes when they first aired + the first and possibly second movie, and the rushed ending from the eps seemed like it couldn't be fixed with the movies.

I've learned recently that the series creator was still milking the cow to this day; are those eps modified / fixed / improved story wise from the original, or are they just the same eps in HD?

Other request: is it worth going back to Evangelion, do new films/OVA/whatever bring something to it (and hopefully some closure), and if so any recommendations on what to watch and in which order?

The series was constrained by budget and the end was not as the creator intended.

The movies do fix much of that in a way, the first and second being a replication/replacement of the series.

The third is a whole other level of wtf, but imho still the best so far and 4 only promises to continue that.

And depending on what madcap theory you adhere to, the first movie is actually a linear continuation of the series as the end of the series permits a universe reboot, essentially an in universe cannon retcon allowing for movies 1 and 2 to set up 3 and 4.

If you're into existential crisis exploration as portrayed by angsty teens and giant city destroying robots this is for you.

What exactly the movies are is a bit of a point of contention. Imo End of Eva is simply what happens after the series and Rebuild is reincarnations of the characters going through everything again mostly the same until it beautifully goes off the rails.

The "rushed" ending of the TV series was due to their budget being cut off. That was fixed with the movie End of Evangelion and is the "true" ending of the series. (It is in my personal opinion the greatest anime movie ever made). The rebuild movies are a reboot/retelling of the TV series that introduces new characters and events that goes in a completely new direction in the third movie. Although it is hinted at that the rebuild movies may actually be a direct sequel to the original series and movie.

Basically just watch them in release order, you can skip Death and Rebirth though because that's just a recap of the TV show.

there are also the rebuild movies which re-imagine the series in a more concise manner. They are pretty good so far but the 4th one has been pending for years now
