Process

These are George's Original Unaltered Trilogy, or GOUT for short, release for Star Wars IV, V and VI. These are the versions as released as part of the Bonus DVD from this set. These files have been created by me through the following process:

  1. The DVDs were ripped using MakeMKV on the Bonus DVDs. IV ended up at 5.69 GB, V at 6.20 GB, and VI at 6.38 GB. ~~(If there is interest in these files, I'll upload them on Zippyshare within a few days)~~ ~~There's interest, they'll go up on /r/ZippyShare on Sunday.~~ Files are uploaded here.

  2. Research was made into what these videos were referred to. The consensus was they were referred to as GOUT. High resolution images of the DVD covers from the Special Edition were found on themoviedb (they are included as jpg files with the movies)

  3. HandBrake was used on the unwieldy direct DVD rips to convert them to x265. The "H.265 MKV 720p30" preset was used as a basis. Picture size was set to the original values. Cropping was set to 0. Video Codec set to "H.265 (x265)". Framerate was set to "Same as source" and "Variable framerate." Quality to 21. All remaining tracks were imported. Encode was performed one by one on each file.

  4. Files were uploaded on Zippyshare and Mega as above.

Great job. Well done.

These really aren't worth the download. They are "technically" 720p, but there's a massive amount of matting, significantly reducing the frame/video size. If you scale the actual video frame up you introduce massive amounts of noise to an already noisy, grainy film with washed out colors.

The Despecialized versions are FAR superior.

Here's a comparison. This version on top, Despecialized on bottom, in VLC

Oh, absolutely. Given the choice between the Despecialized and GOUT, you should always watch the Despecialized. It's higher resolution, looks better, sounds better and is significantly closer to how Star Wars looked back in 1977. BUT | Megalinks MegaDB BUT some people like to collect everything they can, and I do think that GOUT is definitely one of those things that people would be quite interested in collecting.

PS, I just made a comparison between the one I posted, the original rip and a 10bit one I made just now. Which is right here. My consensus? Whoops. It's awful.

lol the 10bit looks way better than the one you've just posted?

I done fucked up, that's what.

Didn't realise how harshly compressed the one I posted actually was. I just checked the audio and that it was all there, i.e. "are the credits there? Yeah. It's fine."

These dvds were just rips of the 1993 laserdiscs, and it looks awful. 4:3 letterboxed, faded colors, noisey picture, its all around bad. Get the despecialed edition, those were made with pride and care, this was made to make a quick buck.

My personal favorites are the Team Negative 1 releases made from the original 35mm prints and authored for bluray at 1080p. Very cool stuff. I appreciate the Despecialized editions as well but Team Negative releases are just... incredible (Especially Star Wars "Silver Screen Edition". ESB and ROTJ are labeled "Grindhouse" and have not been cleaned up like "Silver Screen").

The only drawbacks to the Despecialized editions, in my opinion, are that they are 720p and have variations in video quality based on whichever source is being used for a particular scene.

Having said that, Harmy is a gangster for putting in such hard work on the Despecialized editions which are also excellent.

My issue with ep IV despecialized is the skin tone seems off, especially on Tattooine. V and VI are pretty much flawless though.

The skin tone of SSE looks better but the rest of the colors are a bit washed out in general. I wonder if despecialized 3.0 will fix the color issues, I hear Harmy is gonna use the SSE as a basis for it

Somebody at OT.com cleaned the hell out of a copy of Empire and it looks AMAZING.

It is, indeed. I only have a free account with a 15gb cap on it. Putting many large files on it is, therefore, an inconvenience.
