A true original, and one of my favorite albums from this past decade. This is music that will scare, delight, uplift, and destroy in equal measure. Gonjasufi is all over the place stylistically, running the gamut from lo-fi garage rock to electronica to almost-but-not-quite straight up hip-hop. Allmusic review describes it as sounding "like if J. Dilla produced George Clinton after visiting with the Dalai Lama," and that's about as apt a description as I think can stand for this album. His music makes me feel like I'm wandering through an open air market in Marrakesh with William S. Burroughs while Tom Waits and Lee "Scratch" Perry are waiting for us with a hookah full of hashish in a Bikram yoga studio. In a word, otherworldly.
Produced mostly by The Gaslamp Killer, with a standout track "Ancestors" produced by Flying Lotus. Recommended for fans of electronica, boundary-pushing rock, eastern-influenced worldbeat sounds, or spacey psychedelia that makes you feel heavy and light at the same time.
Enjoy, and as always PLAY IT LOUD!
