Malcolm in the Middle (2000-2006) Seasons 1-7 10-bit x265 Web-DL re-encodes from various sources. These are re-encoded from the same files posted here several months ago, thanks /u/x265kip!
Original files can be found here:
For those who aren't familiar with the current publicly available HD copies of MitM (even the official versions on Netflix), the quality varies significantly from episode-to-episode and even from scene-to-scene. The quality here is on par with previous encodes and ranges from very good to poor but is perfectly watchable, most of the time it looks pretty good if not a little soft. The main issue you will notice is an artifact of the upscale process present on ALL public HD copies, which looks like a blurry double image, like if you were watching a 3D movie without the glasses on.
Seasons 6 and 7 appear to be from a PAL source, the video for those has been forced from 25fps to 23.976fps (a.k.a. 24000/1001p, speed film runs at), the subtitles stretched by a factor of 1.0427 and the audio was re-sampled for pitch-correction and to account for the time stretch, then filtered to remove high frequency artifacts caused by timecode bleed. This was done in Adobe Audition and the results are very good. If anyone would like to create time corrected versions of the original AVC copies they can use mkvtoolnix to combine the audio and subs from this set with the original video forced to 23.976fps. This is a quick process that doesn't change video quality as it doesn't need to re-encode.
Hopefully someday a true HD release of MitM will become available, but don't hold your breath, this is unlikely to happen ever due to the expense of licensing the music for the show and the lack of profitability from sale of TV shows. Fox should still have HD copies from when episodes originally aired in 720p but releasing those copies on a format they were not originally contracted for requires re-licensing the music due to the nightmare that is intellectual property rights law. It's unlikely Fox would do this or another body would cough up the money for all the rights, there just isn't any money in it.

you legend!!! This halves the space it takes on my hard drive and it's better quality. Thanks heaps!!!

Damn I already have the original files, almost 190gb, but replacing them with more efficient x265 is tempting. Kinda want to preserve quality for this great of a tv show though
[-] taco_bellis | 4 points
Same dilemna, I probably will to save the 100 gb

Do these have subtitles or do they sync up with any external sources?
[-] tiiiiimmmm | 6 points
These include English subs properly timed for each episode. I cannot guarentee other subs will sync easily but they may work, I haven't checked to see if anything was cut from the episodes or if they were just sped up. There's a chance some or all of the episodes have minor cuts that will put them out of sync with subs from other sources.
[-] NotYourTypicalGod | 1 points
Having trouble with subs only showing top row. If theres a 2nd row in subs its not showing.
If theyre working for everyone else, would you like to show me to right direction how to get them to work :)? Running plex and just replaced my original dvd:s with these and afraid that I just lost my fully working versions and need to do them again from dvd:s :E
[-] tiiiiimmmm | 1 points
Yes, unfortunately it does look like at least some of the subtitles were incomplete, another user brought this up but unfortunately the error is present in the source files. Seasons 6 and 7 are definitely edited for time and content, there were several scenes that I know were different from the original broadcast, but the rest of the episodes should sync with the DVD subs easily. I'd recommend just looking for subtitles already ripped online or you can just extract the subtitles off the disc yourself for use with this set if you want the HD ones with correct subs. That way you don't spend a ton of time encoding again too.

I wasn't but you should be able to use my audio for the release you have as long as they based it off the hotstar files and left the framerate constant at 25fps, you can do that process I talked about in the post of muxing my audio and subs with the other video forced to run at 23.976fps.

Dumb question here but is there a torrent of this?
[-] tiiiiimmmm | 7 points
No, sorry, I don't have the bandwidth or a seedbox for a torrent. However, I created these files so if anyone wants to create a torrent I give them permission to do so.
[-] a_BIG_willie | 1 points
Thanks for the response
[-] Wipfburger | 2 points
Thanks a ton for uploading this, you rock. Loving x265.
[-] [deleted] | 2 points
Zippyshare please?
[-] tiiiiimmmm | 2 points
Another user is helping me out with mirroring this to zippy, it will be a few days though.
[-] [deleted] | 3 points
I love you man.
[-] themanwithnolife | 1 points
Any update on the zippy mirror?
[-] tiiiiimmmm | 2 points
I'll check. They were working on the Simpsons upload that took a long time and I know I just tried uploading stuff to zippy last week and the up speed was down to like 100 kb/s. That's the big problem with zippyshare, awful and unstable upload rates that take forever and keep failing so you have to manage them. Unfortunately that makes uploading to zippy take forever.
[-] Cam_The_Plumber | 1 points
It's all good m8 thanks for the reply :)
[-] tiiiiimmmm | 2 points
Zippy links for MITM are up, sorry for the delay.
[-] Cam_The_Plumber | 1 points
No problem at all mate. Thanks for this :)
Ahhh just downloaded the Zippy and can't open the archive.. every part seems to be the same size except for the last one of course... anyone else have the same issue?
[-] tiiiiimmmm | 2 points
Every part being the same size except the last one is standard, it's broken to 500mb splits with the last piece being whatever was left over. Most likely your archiving software doesn't support rar5 (newish rar format), try updating your archiving software.
Hey thanks for the response mate, I didn't word it correctly I did realise the last one was meant to be a different size. I did download WinRAR though (was trying to use 7zip before) and now it seems to be unpacking (80% complete right now) so it must have been that. Cheers for the upload (and all your uploads - bloody legendary!)
[-] tiiiiimmmm | 2 points
No worries, glad it's working for you

Thank you!
Thanks For this. Only thing is s04e20 has only audio for the last 3 minutes. It's an issue with the source as well.
"Yes, no, maybe... Can you repeat the question..."
Growing up, this was the best show on YTV. Thank you so much!!!
[-] lunaticBotch | 1 points
Can you do 720p as well?
[-] tiiiiimmmm | 2 points
Sorry, I have no plans to encode more versions. These take a lot of processing time to create.
[-] SpongederpSquarefap | 1 points

I'm not quite sure how to answer the question about batch remuxing, that really depends on what it is you are trying to remux. Whatever you end up with, I think it would be a shell script you write to batch process with mkvmerge.exe, the actual program mkvtoolnix uses to write a new mkv file. To do this you need to understand a bit about command line interfaces and simple scripting logic, and even then depending on what task you want to do it's probably just easier to hand set the files you need.
If you want to batch extract a particular stream from the set that's much easier. Use MKVcleaver, you can add all the files you want and then click the check-mark in the right-side box for whatever stream you want to batch extract.
For Audition, the process is pretty easy but takes a lot of time and HDD space (For example each episode of Malcolm took about an hour to process and required 3GB of HDD space while processing, but the nearly 3hr audio file for The Abyss took about 16hrs and required over 30GB of HDD space be available while it was processing). You just load the file you want and then in the menu bar select Effects > Time and Pitch > Stretch and Pitch (process)... and stretch the audio to the new timestamp. The audio and video files were the same length for Malcolm so it was easy to check check the the exact length of the episodes after the video was forced to 23.976 fps, I just opened the videos in media player classic and clicked the timestamp marker until it showed me the full thing including milliseconds. If the audio and video tracks don't match in length exactly then you can just stretch the audio by the the ratio of PAL to normal speed which is 25/23.976 = 1.0427. Make sure you check the box "Lock Stretch and Pitch Shift (Resample)" before you hit apply on the time stretch, otherwise it will try to stretch without correcting the pitch. You should be bringing the pitch down by 0.72 semitones. After you apply the stretch you will need to clean up some high-pitch artifacts that occur because of the re-sampling, from the menu go to Effects > Filer and EQ > Notch Filter... and use the "Reduce High Freq Timecode Bleed" preset from the drop-down menu in the dialog box it opens.
However, if you really want to learn how to clean up audio you will want to play with the Notch Filter instead of using its presets. The Notch Filter is used to adjust or eliminate certain frequencies like a constant high pitched whine. What you want to do to get rid of a high pitch artifact is grab the right-most node from the notch filter and drag it up and to the right until you make the sound you want to get rid of as loud as possible. You will have to play with this until you really get a handle on how frequencies work. Once you find the sweet spot, reduce the Notch Width from the drop-down menu at the bottom of the dialog box from Narrow to Very Narrow and readjust the same node again to the point where the sound you want to eliminate is the loudest, remember you should not have to move the node very far at this point. Once you have the node set again, set the Notch Width down to Super Narrow and repeat the same adjusting process. Now that you have focused in on the exact frequency you want eliminated, you can set the gain down to between -30db and -60db, again you will just have to play with that number until you get the sound you want. You will almost certainly want to check the Ultra Quiet checkbox at the bottom of the Notch Filter dialog box too, this will take more processing time when you run the filter but you will get better results especially if you plan to listen through headphones or high performance speakers.
The way the Notch Filter works is it lets you adjust how loud or quiet individual frequencies are in the recording, moving a node left or right changes the frequency it is adjusting and then bringing the node up or down adjusts how loud that frequency is during playback. By using the notch filter this way, you are trying to zero in on the exact frequency that is causing the artifact you want to remove and then adjusting the volume of just that frequency down to the point where you can't hear it but it doesn't make other parts of the playback sound weird by dropping the other frequencies you do want to hear too low.

Is there an issue with seasons 6/7 being 25fps? Why is converting them to 23.976fps ideal?
[-] tiiiiimmmm | 1 points
It speeds up the audio and makes the pitch higher. I don't like it, I think the voices sound too squeaky
[-] rnishouldbestudying | 1 points
Could you share the exact command used to fix the avc copies? I'd really appreciate it
[-] tiiiiimmmm | 2 points
You will need both the AVC and HEVC copies, and you will need to do this for each file:
load the AVC copy into mkvtoolnix
select the video track and set the Default FPS to 23.976p
unselect everything except for the video track, leave that one checked
load the HEVC copy, uncheck the HEVC video track, and click start muxing

UTR has recently uploaded their attempt at this show in 1080p x265. 63.2 GB in total. Wonder how it compares to this magnificent effort?

I'm grabbing it now to see, they don't say what their source is so I'd like to know as well. I'm also hoping they have a Netflix copy of seasons 6-7, I did notice some small tv-edit cuts in the copies I upped and they clearly are from some other service (a little lower quality too).
[-] MrTattyBojangles | 1 points
I found these on snahp.it, I'd be willing to bet that these are their sources:
http://snahp.it/malcolm-in-the-middle-s01-05-1080p-netflix-web-dl-dd5-1-x264-qoq/
http://snahp.it/malcolm-in-the-middle-s06-s07-1080p-hotstar-web-dl-aac2-0-h-264-btgm/
The UTR file list includes "NF" and "Hotstar".
I've compared the pilot with yours and UTR's. Looks pretty good to me, but I'm no expert. UTR's bitrate is higher than I expected.
[-] tiiiiimmmm | 1 points
Yeah, those look like the same files I used, UTR needs to make sure to label their sources better on their release pages.
[-] MrTattyBojangles | 1 points
They usually label them correctly. This is the first time I've seen them not do it. I don't recognise the encoder though, I think they're a new recruit. Reckon they've done a good job?
[-] tiiiiimmmm | 5 points
Looks good to me, Seasons 6&7 are still sped up but you can always force the frame rate to 23.976fps and mux in my audio to fix that. It also doesn't surprise me that someone was able to get the same quality at a smaller file size on this set, I didn't do any work on trying to optimize file size and just tried to retain quality. The source was just such a pain in the ass to work with from the high variability in quality from scene to scene and that obnoxious ghosting border and crosshatching thing that's present. Some parts of this series look like a dot-matrix printed comic book.
[-] MrTattyBojangles | 1 points
Haha! Thanks, I'll make sure to do that.
