The Simpsons (1989-2003) Seasons 1-14 10-bit x265 DVD/Bluray Rips (mostly re-encoded) from various sources. Seasons 1-2 and 4-12 are CRF 18 re-encodes of DVD rips, Season 3 is a native CRF 18 DVD rip, and Seasons 13-14 are Bluray rip CRF 22 re-encodes. I only keep this part of the series myself, I will not be encoding the rest. All DVD episodes are 720x480p Anamorphic SD and properly detelecined (i.e. no blended scenes) and bluray episodes are 1440x1080p HD.

The new set is much higher quality, re-encoded from good x264 rips instead of old .avis, I recommend replacing them.

For at least seasons 1-12, yes. Ime didn't detelecine their's when they made them so they have blending and interlacing artifacts.

Honestly I didn't need to re-encode seasons 13 and 14 but I do recommend my s1-12 over UTR's in this case due to the detelecine issues

Did you do any cropping or filtering, or is it a straight re-encode? Since they're DVDs, some of the episodes have some odd scans, where there are random black lines along one of the sides of the image. Pretty conmmon in old DVDs. Usually these would be cropped and the image resized, but TC didn't do that with his encodes, they were just straight handbrake encodes.

I was actually planning on hunting down the ISOs to do my own encode, but if you've already fixed the issues, it saves me a boatload of effort.

I haven't checked these encodes yet, but if tiiiiimmmm didn't remove all the additional audio tracks from the original files, you should be able to shave off another 150+ mb or so.

They've already been re-encoded once so I think it's more a case of needing to encode fresh copies from the DVDs and yeah, being x265 they should definitely be smaller

I created these so they would look good on my system, I am using a 61in TV that I sit about 8ft from, I need files to have high bit-rates so you don't see compression artifacting. The video stream for each file has been shrunk in size by about 30-40% over its x264 equivalent, this is the best I could do without spending a lot more time or reducing quality (I am using a CRF encode at Medium preset because I have so much to get through, if this were to be encoded with a 2-pass VBR on very slow you could get them smaller although I'm really not sure by how much). These also have the original AC3 audio from the DVDs as the main track, you can drop ~60-70MB a file by compressing that to AAC or Opus.

Yeah it's difficult to get stuff like this right when you have a big screen. I meant more that they'd look better if your source was the DVD instead of a x264 file. Already lost quality so the encode from that is going to look worse no matter what, like dubbing tapes. I might start ripping all the episodes from DVDs into individual vobs today to have a play

My opinion is Simpsons is really only good for the first 8 seasons, then goes down hill from there. Frankly, I think it's been bad longer than it's been good. There are enough gems/episodes I have nostalgia for even if they aren't that good for me up until around seasons 13 or 14 so I cut it off there. As for the upscale process, I am familiar with it but I don't do that, it takes a ludicrous amount of time and resources and the results are so-so.

Upscaling using waifu2x is really resource intensive, and even if you have good hardware it can take 12-24 to do one episode of show depending on what settings you use. I believe he is encoding them with a new method that will help deinterlace it much better.
