I have the same reaction. Any time someone I know starts into it for the first time I always tell them to let me know so I can watch it with them and experience it vicariously again.

My friend talked me into watching it, and I am so happy he did. I finished the first season last night, and I have to say, this is a complete and utter masterpiece of television. The writing, the performances, the cast, the direction, the pacing, the cinematography, the badass old school policework. It's all so perfect!

You're only warming up. It really hits some incredible highs from season 3 onwards. A lot of people don't like S2 so much but I actually loved it as it's so different from what came before.

Just enjoy every minute, because when it's over you'll look at almost all other TV shows with total disdain!

I'm very excited for S2 purely for that reason: it's different. Going to break out S02E01 in a couple of hours, I can't wait to see where this goes! It's one of those watching experiences where it really feels like high-brow viewing. Like it feels like it sits on that super artistic top shelf of TV next to Breaking Bad and Rome. The Wire is already one of my favourite shows, and I've only seen 20% of it!
