Sounds like a hardware upgrade is in order? It's unlikely that x265 is going to go away, and if it does you'll probably have issues with the replacement as well. Times change, they always have, and always will.

I haven't checked in a few years, but last I checked VLC was pretty shit.

Try using Daum Pot Player, or another player set up specifically for playing x265.
