Why though? If there is a x265 release there is a 99% chance there are multiple x264 versions out there. The other way around? Not so much.
I was looking for a bunch of shows here and they are all in fucking X265. I have googled, added codecs and tweaked my devices, but x265 does not wanna play ball. Of course if there is an alternative, then I grab that...but to go from being able to play ANYTHING to this bump in a road format, is super frustrating. And if you can play x265 you can play X264. The reverse? Nope

What kind of device(s) are you running?
2 Acer laptops with Windows 7. They both have power media centers and can play every god damned format apart from x265. I even had access to an HP Windows 8 PC last year and it could not handle x265 either. I know I sound whiny, but fuck me, this is some perverse shit.

All depends on the HW of these notebooks/pcs. If they have a fairly newer GPU or CPU it works flawlessly. All Ivy Bridge up can decode x265 with quick sync built in and a cheap 1030 with a Pascal GPU can do the job. As for android tv boxes - every 25 USD box (S905W or RK3229) should have no troubles decoding 1080p 10bit x265
Thanks for the helpful info. But, I am one of those people that wants to exhaust the troubleshooting before spending. I mean from the reactions here, it seems as though the HW should be able handle it, but maybe I am just the outlier with three stubborn devices. Thanks again, because that kind of response is way better than just assuming someone is being a douche. Thanks!
Have you tried playing it through Plex? If you Direct Play with the 2nd PC via the actual Plex Media Player app (not through the browser), I am able to Direct Play, which causes hardly any strain on the PC that has PMS installed.
Or, run Plex on one of the PCs and get yourself an Nvidia Shield (my setup). The Shield plays anything you throw at it and you might start preferring the x265 posts (like myself).
just get a cheap Chinese S905X box. They're like $35 and decodes X265 up to 4K 60Hz
I will do a bit more research as I fear that one day X265 will be the default. But thanks for the recommendation!
It's probably starting to transition. People still use XviD though, so I don't see X264 going away completely anytime soon. AV1 might replace X265 at some point.. Codecs are always a moving target.
I like X265 myself due to having slower internet.
