One mid-season episode review that I randomly stumbled on (haven't seen the show yet either) touched on this and said that many of the initial reviews that panned the show when it first started seemed to have expected a full-blown parody of Star Trek, whereas in reality it's more of a heartfelt homage to it. With funny bits, sure, but not just that.

Sounded like a must see for any Trek fan, especially if you liked the series more than these new Abrams movies.
