[How to] Hardware Encode h.264/h.265 with AMD Graphics Cards | Megalinks MegaDB [How to] Hardware Encode h.264/h.265 with AMD Graphics Cards

This in response to Grenff awesome post on hardware encoding using nvidia graphic cards(NVENC)! I loved it thought it was great but I have just switched to AMD since. I noticed there wasn't an option for AMD encoding so I decided to make a post showing you guys how to with free programs! You need two things. -A's Video Converter -> http://bluesky23.yukishigure.com/en/AsVideoConv.html

-K-Lite Codec Pack -> (Thank you Schmave for this fix on hardforum!!!!) ->https://www.codecguide.com/download_k-lite_codec_pack_basic.htm

The codec pack fixes A's Video Converter from always Failing. I don't know if this will make a difference but make sure the audio decoder output is selected as "Same as input" when installing. Anyone else can comment if they think something else matters but I don't think it will affect A's settings. MAKE SURE TO DECLINE THE EXTENSION. I don't know what it is or does but I hate it when developers shove you extra crap you don't need.

After installing both (or if you decided to go portable for A's) Just make sure under Transcode settings you use the "AMD VCE H.265(or h.264) Encoder". I'm sure you can figure out the rest. You can check out what type of Bitrate and other transcode settings discussion here.

yes. This is absolutely retarded why would anyone want to ruin the quality like that ?

There is even a good comment in the thread op linked to: https://www.reddit.com/r/megalinks/comments/6wx58z/how_to_encode_in_x265h265hevc_for_the_impatient/dmbiz5j/

and even if you wanted to do this, wouldn't you want to convert source quality -> x265 and not x264 -> x265 to further shittify things?

WOW. Fantastic post. Off to test on an AMD 8370 w/ R290...

I have an AMD-8370 / 8GB RAM / 256GB SSD / R290 4GB

In my first dirty run, here are the results for h264: Test file was an extra ripped from The Dark Knight Rises BluRay - 348MB @ 3m19s length [1080p]

AVC set to 'Quality' over 'Balance' and AC3 passthru

1m 44s @ 45fps to 144MB

Handbrake, Med speed

3:[email protected] to 164MB

Quality was comparable in my eyes. The devil is only in the details when it comes to compression. I'll give another go and share the results if anyone is interested. the R290 does not support h265 at a hardware level, so I can't test that.

Its a waste of time, the only purpose of gpu encoding is quick and dirty cpu load free video broadcasting, gpus don't have the ability to apply advanced encoding techniques for best quality, its simply the quick and dirty method and should be avoided for anything outside streaming.

It really is a waste of time for anything other than streaming. Quick and dirty isn't the best practice for archiving.
