Not necessarily. You can enjoy the movie without the book. If you like it, you should definitely check out the book. They changed quite a bit for the movie. And most of the characters have huge background stories, the Bower's gang alone isn't really featured enough in the movie in my opinion.

Even if you didn't like the movie, listen to the audio book at least, it's one of the best books I've read (twice and also twice the audio book).

Yeah, could anyone chime in on this? I'm around 1/4 of the way through the audiobook but probably won't actually finish it for another couple of months at this rate - if it's worth waiting until I'm done with the book, I'll probably make this a movie to watch with my family around the holidays

I haven't seen the movie yet but I can tell you the book is most definitely worth the read. There's no way the movie will flesh out the story like the book does.

Oh, definitely - the audiobook recording is like 20x longer, there's absolutely no way the movie will cover all that. (Seriously, 44 hours of audiobook takes me forever to get to finish - I usually listen for 10-30 minutes before bed). I'm just wondering if anyone familiar with both knows if the movie may hurt my enjoyment of the remainder of the book or if they're sufficiently different enough that it doesn't matter. For example, the Dark Tower movie would not have hurt my enjoyment of the book series in the least; it's so loosely based that there aren't any spoilers or anything really.

Not sure if this is considered a spoiler, but the movie only takes place in the 1958 portion from the book. I imagine if/when there is a sequel they will do the 1985 part.

Nah, I wouldn't consider that a spoiler at all. Based on what I've gotten through so far I can't really imagine the '58 portion without the 85' portion, though, especially considering that it seems to have pretty quickly given away the '58 parts ending (at least to some extent, unless they remember something new and there's a nice twist, but I find that hard to believe based on how Stephen King's endings typically go, lol).

I saw the movie first, then listened to the audiobook. I loved the movie, and it was really interesting to hear the differences and what wasn’t included. I think you’ll enjoy the movie wether you have read the book or not though.
