4K has 4x as many pixels as 1080p, so theoretically they'd take up 4x the space, but UHD blurays use HEVC rather than the AVC used by 1080p blurays. HEVC (aka h265) is the successor to AVC (aka h264) and promises up to twice as much compression with the same loss in quality, utilizing more efficient compression methods and improved algorithms.

A lot of 1080p bluray remuxes have a video bitrate around 20Mbps, but 4K remuxes appear to usually have video bitrates around and above 40Mbps. While 4K remuxes are bigger, they don't need to be quite as big due to HEVC.

What are the hardware requirements to play 4k video encoded in h265? A while ago I tried to open a video of a 4k x265 version of suicide squad but my player struggled with it. I'm soon upgrading my laptop so I'd like to keep that in mind.

Laptops, you need a non integrated chipset to play 4k. Desktop, anything From Nvidia since the 950 has hardware decode built into it for H265. ATI/AMD side, I have no clue, sorry. Intel integrated, I believe you need at least Kabylake for 10bit H265 for hardware decoding, otherwise your system is going to crawl.

that being said, even without taking the bitrate in the equation, 4K BD should be 4x the size but /2 because of H265 I just read UHD BDs come in 3 flavor, 50gb, 66gb, and 100gb, so MMFR was probably 50 or 66 I guess. (there's like 90mins of extras on MMFR UHD disc)

I'm curious of UHDBD's future with open source AV1 on it's way in..

So for some reason my computer can't seem to play the file. On MPC, it just doesn't work at all. On VLC it lags really bad. I have a pretty good computer and I can't think of why it wouldn't work. Do you know what might be wrong? I've never downloaded a movie file like this before

Try fiddling with your video decoder settings to use nVidia CUDA to decode h265, and it should play just fine.

I figured it out, it was the TrueHD audio. Changed it to regular and it worked.
