I once tried it and after 5 posts or so, I was done. The 50GB cap on my Internet made it really hard to keep downlading and uploading. I was just wondering why you guys do what you do. Is it the want to help others, is it satisfying?

I mostly do it for the preservation of high-quality downloads of movies and anime that can only be found in one place. If the source is taken down then it is lost for an indefinite period of time. I also like sharing my favourite stuff with you all. The upvotes and comments are an added bonus.

To me, it's helping out the community to get stuff that I'm interested in and I figure others are interested in also. And as that community grows, hopefully others will take the time to upload and share stuff.
I think that the more people can share, the greater the diversity of what other people can discover and enrich their lives.
Also, since Mega doesn't quite have caps like many sites do where you're not able to grab files bigger than 1 GB, or crappy speeds, Mega is just much more enjoyable.
Thnx for your contribution. It's true I've discovered a lot of movies and stuff here that I didn't know existed.

They do have ~5GB cap...
I cannot download any file that is bigger than 4-5GB.
[-] GoslingIchi | 3 points
5 GB every 6 hours. I use Megasync and leave it in the background for large files.
If you go to NitroFlare/Uploaded/etc, you are not allowed to download a file that is 1 GB or larger, which is quite different from what Mega does.
[-] easy90rider | 3 points
I did not know that... So you can download a 90GB file if you keep chaning the IP?
jdownloader / megadownloader gives me an error, and 0% download.
[-] GoslingIchi | 3 points
I only use Megasync. 90 GB would take a long time the way I do it, but yes by changing your IP every 5 GB you could probably pull down 90 GB in an hour (assuming pretty high speed internet).
I stumbled upon this subreddit by chance through a google search and immediately found a bunch of things that I had been looking to download with super fast direct links.I couldn't have been happier; in my mind I had struck gold.
After a little while, I started looking through the request thread out of curiosity. I went there to make a request, but noticed there were many people asking for things that I already had in my library, including some rare, hard-to-find stuff. I felt it would be nice if I gave back to the community, so I uploaded a couple of requests, and it felt good to help people find what they were looking for - even better than it felt when I felt I'd found a goldmine.
I remembered the frustration i felt when I couldn't find a movie or TV show I'd been looking for in high quality, and I wanted to ease some of that frustration. I'd only planned on uploading a few things here and there where I could help, and before I knew it, I was uploading several things every day, because I can. I have no bandwidth caps, and even if my upload speed is shit, I have the capacity to help, so I will.

As for the 50 GB cap, I'm just going to expire older uploads. If someone wants an older file, I can just upload it, and give it a new link.
[-] nyuszika7h | 7 points
I think the OP meant his internet's data cap. But as for MEGA's data cap, there are ways around it, such as creating multiple accounts. But as long as you store them and stay active so you can reupload them, it's no big deal. There's the bus factor, though content is usually mirrored in other places, and the files would probably be taken down sooner by DMCA than that.

I do it for my self.
If I'm going to download a fat web-dl and handbrake it why not uploaded it for everyone. I've done 90% of the work already.
You'd probably laugh it off but it's like an OCD. I've yet to discover the reason of it being what it is. I don't know if it is to help others or just because I've been there. Trying to find direct download link for some content endlessly in sheer desperation because the torrent is dead.
I don't have a fast enough internet connection to upload, but if I did, I would be uploading to preserve the content. The more spread it is, the easier it'll be to find when I lose it. Plus, it makes other people happy and the film industry ad, win-win
I do it to scratch a few itches.
My main reason is to connect people with content that would otherwise be out of reach. Stuff that is out of print, unreleased (like movies that only had HDTV broadcasts) or blocked by territorial bs. File sharing defeats scarcity and the price gouging that goes with it. In the early days of eBay I paid over $100 each for a few out of print CDs. Those CDs are now available on torrents in mp3 and flac. I would have had no problem with paying retail for those discs but $100 each was crazy. Having a free alternative would have been nice.
I also do it to try to draw attention to some titles that I think have been forgotten or poorly judged, like Superman Returns. My rip of that included a link to an excellent video essay exploring the movie's subtext. I like it when the things that I like do well.
[-] GaryYadena | 8 points
Hey guys, little off-topic: which software do you use to rip dvds and blurays? i asked in the help thread aswell but it seems to be rarely used. I used freemake video converter years ago but they slowed it down to sell premium. i tried some other software but had the same problems. (not quite that off-topic since i want to start ripping my collection and upload some stuff)
[-] tiiiiimmmm | 6 points
Handbrake is the best combo of easy to use and powerful so I'd go for that if you're not comfortable with downloading code and compiling a program yourself. If you are comfortable with that, you can compile very specific versions of ffmpeg to encode stuff just the way you want.
For DVDs handbrake can read straight off the disc but Bluray I use makeMKV to rip the video to the HDD first, then Handbrake. For DVDs you probably need to enable detelecining as well (will be listed under filters) to avoid blending scenes.
[-] Pencelikeslittleboys | 5 points
I haven't done any rips for a while but I've always used handbrake for that kind of stuff.
I would recommend using MakeMKV first to convert the DVD/BD (losslessly) to MKV, that way you're preserving al lthe chapter and language information, then use Handbrake to encode your video.
For dvds I still use handbrake I don’t rip Blu rays as I never bought a player for them

I think the only reason so few people subbed here is because the rest just aren't aware. Getting a proper link of the highest quality is the best form of the interent (and that's what people do on this sub - they just do internet, really), can't compare it to infinity dumb warez sites with atrocious, infected UI that still has 720p links.
To all who shares links here - thanks and stay awesome.
[-] bluepandaice | 7 points
If i had fast internet i would do so because why not? When i see requests of stuffs i have i wanna upload but my internet us too slow for that, or too capped.
[-] R3a1ityCheque | 7 points
I do it because I like to. This sub only exists because of the efforts of others. After only downloading for the better part of a year I wanted to contribute something back.
[-] WaifuKenny | 6 points
because i use my encodes in svp plus people like their media i guess
Some series are hard to find online so i just make online backups of it and share it online so others can find it easily and enjoy the stuff just like me

Does anyone else have terrible upload speeds while uploading to mega? I was getting 150kbs, when I can upload to google at 12mbps. Is there any reason why? Also, whats the best way to upload stuff. Should I make a new free account, and then upload 50gb worth to it? I have a west wing collection I would like to put on here but its over 100gb. Not sure how to best handle that.
Create junk accounts and divide them in two separate uploads.

how?
How to split-》winrar allows you to do so while compressing your file. You may specify the size of each split.
How to create junk accounts-》 google 10 min mail or fakemailgenerator

If no one did it there wouldn't be content. Anything I can add up here potentially attracts or keeps activity on this thread, which makes it more attractive for others to post content I might want. It's nice to fill people's requests too or help reignite some interest in something obscure.
The situation is also right for me to make it easy. I don't have data caps or share internet, my computer is on anyway churning through video encoding and uploading requires very minimal CPU time (which is what I care about to make encoding go as fast as possible), so why not?

Define better. I'm doing CRF encodes so the encoder preset will make the file nominally smaller but will not increase quality. I don't think that trade-off is worth it so I use medium.
Also, that has nothing to do with not having other programs hog the CPU which is what I was talking about. CPU time is a measure of efficiency or consumption, it's not analogous to a specific length of time.

CPU time (or process time) is the amount of time for which a central processing unit (CPU) was used for processing instructions of a computer program or operating system, as opposed to, for example, waiting for input/output (I/O) operations or entering low-power (idle) mode. The CPU time is measured in clock ticks or seconds. Often, it is useful to measure CPU time as a percentage of the CPU's capacity, which is called the CPU usage.
CPU time and CPU usage have two main uses.
