Try using the latest Nightly build of VLC - the latest stable build has issues with 7.1 audio, multiple users have reported. You can also try playing the file in MPC-BE if you're on windows, that's the player I use and I experience no issues.

The film was shot in a 1.66:1 aspect ratio originally. That's why it appears like this on the blu-ray.
