SYNOPSIS | Megalinks MegaDB SYNOPSIS

S17E05

The crash of Garuda Indonesia Flight 152 is the country's worst-ever aviation disaster, and one that's baffled investigators.

S17E06

Approaching Charlotte, North Carolina, USAir Flight 1016 falls from the sky; the pilots blame severe weather, but that's only part of the story.

S17E07

On 4 February 2015, TransAsia Airways Flight 235 strikes a viaduct and crashes into the Keelung River shortly after takeoff from Taipei Songshan Airport, killing 43 of the 58 people on board. The causes of the crash were a malfunction of the number two engine and the pilots shutting down the wrong engine.

S17E08

On 31 October 2015, Metrojet Flight 9268 disintegrates in mid-air and crashes into the Sinai Peninsula during a routine chartered flight from Sharm El Sheikh International Airport to Pulkovo Airport, killing all 224 people on board.

Is there anywhere the full series is available?

Well, E08 is the latest aired episode so there's 8 episodes available, the last 4 I've posted here, and here are links to the first 4 (E01 - E04). Enjoy!

This series has taught me how pilots are subject to the same cognitive biases as the rest of us. My favorite remains pilots who neglect to check flaps and slats before takeoff.

Makes me wonder if that'd be the sole reason for airlines making the switch to fully autonomous/remote piloting of airplanes. I mean the pilots are heavily trained but airlines don't take care of them that well, which is why they become liable to make common easily avoidable mistakes.

Do tell - where in the world is any airline moving towards self-piloting commercial aircraft?

In 2025 perhaps. Before they actually make the switch they've to get the proper regulations passed first and to do that they've to produce convincing research. It's happening with cars right now, soon enough airlines will have to innovate further because of high competition & cheap ticket prices and will look towards some implementation of advanced automation.

would you want to fly on an airplane with no human to take over the controls if the computer screws up?

People get used to stuff over time. Would you have bought a plane ticket as easily as you do now back when the industry was just starting out?

Also, I suppose there could be someone present but the piloting would be entirely automated thus mostly eliminating any chance of human error. Not just the planes in the air but also ATCs on ground level would require negligible human involvement.

There is no elimination of human error. At best, a reduction. The flight control software is written by humans, who make errors.

I addition, emergencies arise which could not have been anticipated by programmers. This requires improvising. Many a critical situation has been rescued by a creative pilot.

Exactly. There'll be a reduction in the common mistakes pilots make that a computer would never. Unlike regular mistakes we all do each day, this slight reduction has the potential to save countless lives.

For unexpected situations a computer can make precise calculations and run simulations in mere fractions of seconds to decide what to do unlike humans. We're talking about AI here which would be taught to adapt to deal with situations it wasn't made to handle. Besides, I'm sure there'd be pilots on the ground ready to take over planes remotely if ever needed. The future sounds glorious, doesn't it?

Sorry, I don't think so for one simple reason: catastrophic climate change

Also, remember the Gimli Glider? The reason people walked away from that one was because the pilot was an experienced glider pilot. You can program his skills into a computer, and then every airliner with that software becomes an experienced glider pilot.

And that'd not only save lives but also some serious cash. Making air travel cheaper yet better at the same time. There's certainly pros and cons to everything but we've gotta accept and adapt to the fact that in about a decade, you'll be flying in an airplane with no human pilot present! Perhaps they'll fill the cockpit with First Class seating and you could look out through the giant window.

ive never used openload before, how hard am i gonna get fucked if i disable adblock?

Openload is actually quite good. I just tried it without adblock and there's only a couple popups, but that could depend on which country you're accessing it from. Nothing major though, nothing to worry about. A plus point is that it's fast.
