SYNOPSIS | Megalinks MegaDB SYNOPSIS

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring "the Martian" home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney's safe return.

Thanks for the upload.

I haven't downloaded this, but if anyone is put off by the suspiciously low filesize and wonder about quality... HDR compresses crazy well with HEVC sometimes. The SWTYBLZ release of the HDR version is 20GB, yet the non-HDR version is 40GB. That said, the aforementioned scene release is likely higher quality.

4GB 4K movie, yeah there's no magician for that kind of magic just yet.

HEVC H.265 can compress really well and this copy being HDR making some compression algorithms very efficient.

yeah it can compress really well, not 90% reduction in size well. http://compression.ru/video/codec_comparison/hevc_2017/MSU_HEVC_comparison_2017_free.pdf

Thanks so much for the upload. Quick question though, how do I combine all the individual movie files into one movie?

You can use Keka or HJSplit, I'd recommend the former.

I don't have a mac unfortunately so I can't use Keka, and HJSplit says I need to have .001 file types? Thanks for the help

WinRAR or RarZilla should do it if you're on Windows.

All this 4k is getting wack, I downloaded the 40gb version. The movie kinda stutters, it doesn't play smoothly. The frame rate drops, I don't know if that's do to high bitrate but it's giving me a headache. May just stick with 1080p Remuxes

it's because your computer is too weak to play it properly.

You'll either need a beefy computer or your CPU needs to support HEVC/x265 decryption.

this movie isn't real 4K just fyi. its digital intermediate is 2K. this is just an upscale.

permalink

[-] ZubinB | 13 points | Sep 16 2017 21:07:07

That's true to some extent. See, the source used for this release is a REMUX meaning a direct copy of the Blu-Ray Disk (BD) and in this case, while the movie was filmed in 5K, the CG scenes are in 2K and the live action scenes in true 4K. So that means some of it is in 2K but mostly 4K.

More information here.

Great Quality but the color looks off, it looks like there is a brownish filter over everything. Other versions and the trailer don't have this.

Is that normal?

permalink

[-] ParadoxalDream | 2 points | Oct 10 2017 11:09:43

That's because your screen is not HDR so you can't enjoy the full potential of the file. To watch this on an SDR screen (the next best thing) you need to use madVR filters with HDR to SDR conversion enabled.

Thanks for the upload! How do I enable playback using external graphics card? H/W deccoding in potplayer uses the Internal Graphics card.

I had some issues playing it using VLC. Ended up ticking these hardware decoding settings and it worked fine. (GTX 760)

My VLC playback looks the same, although when i watched it all earlier today I didnt think anything of it. Honestly i figured it was the HDR effect or something... Interesting. I wonder why the players look different.

https://vimeo.com/145806739 < found this... might explain some of it but still doesnt really explain why this version would not have any of the color grading since its sourced from the 4k uhd bluray... ill have to do more digging

http://ultrahd.highdefdigest.com/30659/themartian4kultrahdbluray.html <<< ctrl+F "color grading" and it would seem that...

However, all of these positives come at a price: noise. As Shannon mentioned in his Blu-ray review, this production combined numerous sources into a 2K DI master. According to Fox, this Ultra HD Blu-ray received a new color grading, and represents a combination of upscaled 2K material and downrezzed 5K content. I suspect upscaling is an issue with this release. Minor Blu-ray blemishes -- mostly interior shots inside the HAB or aboard the Hermes -- become gritty noise in Ultra HD Blu-ray even with display sharpness filters set to zero. Granted, it's quite possible my particular TV enhanced this sensation, but I haven't noticed a similar amount of noise on UHD HDR streaming titles, nor on the 'Kingsman' UHD Blu-ray. I also found the black levels in this presentation to be good, but not great (the color of space was brighter than the letter boxing).

[-] GrimChaos | 1 points | Sep 18 2017 21:54:41

If they changed the color tint, I don't think they would make it this extreme. Mars looks brown instead of red. It would be an odd choice. The screen shots (from reviews) looks normal.

How can a 4K 4Gb file even remotely look good ? Why everyone stop to upload h264 movies ? If people download these kind of content they can go on streaming sites and it will look the same, if people download movies it's to build a library with good quality content... Or do they ?
Hey VSauce Michael here.
Thanks tho for uploading for people with slow internet speed :)
