Please don't get me wrong. I appreciate anyone who takes the time and effort to upload anything they want to share. I just want to know why someone would break up a file into multiple parts - You have to download all the parts anyway so what does one gain over a single larger file?

Being able to change the hash of the file avoiding take down + allowing people who download through the browser to be able to resume their progress (kinda) if the browser crashes for whatever reason. (if they downloaded 3 200mb parts then it will stay downloaded)

a good question shouldn't be downvoted.

also changes the hash of the file (a hash is used to identify a file)

As for me those are much better because I don't have Mega premium so I can download from zippy using jdownloader without limit and its faster for me.

That makes sense.

Speed.

How is dloading 5 200mb files faster than dloading 1 1000mb file? I would think it would be slower due to the extra overhead.

Some servers have a max transfer rate per download. If this is less than your max connection speed, you can get multiple files at a higher combined speed.
It was an old concept during the day and it still has it uses, as it been mentioned already, slow unreliable internet or entity browser so can download in parts, or in torrents rehashing if a few parts corrupted then you don't need to download it all again. In today's world with fast and reliable internet failed downloads are quiet rare.

the upload services has file size limit (zippy)
when upload speed sucks you can pause when splitted and reconnect
you can add recovery inside the packed/splitted file, if download goes wrong
hash is changed to avoid pre DMCA or be able to reupload (you can add an empty file inside the packed file with a different name, which changes the hash, so you can with the same size have different hash values to avoid DMCA filters)
Parallel Downloads of the splitted files sometimes are faster as one single download (zippy for example)

Some upload services have a file size limit, like zippy is 200mb. Also, if something goes wrong and the download corrupts, you don't have to redownload the whole file, just part of it.

The size limit makes sense ... although since I don't use zippy it really doesn't matter to me. Never had a download corrupted so ...

It's happened to me a couple times so I'm glad downloads are split up into rar files even though it's a pain in the ass to extract them all every time

If you use JDownloader, it automatically unrars and merges files after download completion
