In 1998 there were two death-by-meteor movies. One was Armageddon, which was the world's introduction to Michael Bay as a blockbuster director.

The other was Deep Impact, which tried to cope with Armageddon by selling itself as 'the thinking-man's disaster movie.' It was the fourth movie released by the then newly-formed DreamWorks Pictures studio. It was the second movie directed by Ami Leder, whose previous work was mostly in television. Her first movie was The Peacemaker, which was also DreamWorks first movie.

The cast is a mix of big names and soon-to-be big names. Elijah Wood, a year before The Lord of the Rings was released. Jon Favreau, who would direct Iron Man ten years later. Dougray Scott, who two years later would play the main villain in Mission Impossible II. And Leelee Sobieski, who... acts... occasionally. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The big names include Morgan Freeman as the President, Robert Duvall, Vanessa Redgrave, Maximilian Schell, James Cromwell and Kurtwood Smith.
