Great movie, but I highly recommend the Theatrical Cut of the original Alien over the Director's Cut

its not the same thing?! What extras do you get?

Essentially, the Theatrical Cut was already cinematic perfection but the studio pushed Scott to do the Director's Cut because he was infamous for having director's cuts better than the original, so it was an easy way for the studio to double dip on what was already such a lucrative title.

Many think the pacing is altered too much in the Director's Cut, throwing off the suspense that made the movie so great to begin with--and Scott himself even says he prefers the original Theatrical Cut, much of the stuff that he put back in the Director's Cut was left out for a reason.

I'll be posting this sometime tomorrow. Working on an encode right now.

permalink

[-] Frodo_Bomb | 2 points | Sep 07 2017 04:40:39

are you encoding from an untouched bluray disc as your source?

permalink

[-] ecchh | 4 points | Sep 07 2017 04:41:29

Yes indeed. I do not re-encode video that has already been encoded from BluRay or DVD.

[-] Frodo_Bomb | 2 points | Sep 07 2017 04:43:51

Would you consider sharing an uncompressed BluRay Remux of the theatrical cut of Alien 1979? I'd be really interested in having that!

permalink

[-] ecchh | 4 points | Sep 07 2017 04:46:05

I suppose there's no reason I couldn't also upload it overnight while it encodes. I'll do my best to include both the remux and the encode in a new post so I don't flood the subreddit with the same movie again and again.

[-] Frodo_Bomb | 2 points | Sep 07 2017 04:47:07

Of course, and thank you so much! Are you ripping them from your own blurays or getting them from torrents or elsewhere?

permalink

[-] ecchh | 5 points | Sep 07 2017 04:50:00

Not a problem at all, I enjoy helping out when & where I can.

As far as where I get the blurays, it's a mix; some from my own collection, some from torrents, all of which I check first to make sure they're what they say they are.

Whenever it's convenient for you, would you be able to upload remuxes (with zippyshare links) of Fight Club, Shin Godzilla, The Breakfast Club, and Terminator 2?

How does the original Terminator compare to its remastered counterpart?

Anyone know the best order to watch these Alien / Predator movies?

permalink

[-] DavidB_SW | 5 points | Sep 06 2017 09:36:39

  • Alien (Theatrical)
  • Aliens (Theatrical) There is a fairly intense debate over which is the better version of Aliens; Theatrical or Extended, I would say Theatrical is a better paced movie overall that you should watch first, if you really like it the Extended cut sticks about 20 mins of deleted fairly interesting scenes into the movie.

The rest of the movies are ok to appalling, apart from Predator which is amazing but has nothing to do with the 2 Alien films.

Also the "Director's cut" of Alien is NOT a Director's cut | Megalinks MegaDB NOT a Director's cut, it's a weird recut curio of the original and should be watched in the same way you might listen to a commentary or a 'making of' doc, i.e. after you have watched the film.

Scott has stated that he was very pleased with the original theatrical cut of Alien, saying that, "For all intents and purposes, I felt that the original cut of Alien was perfect. I still feel that way", and that the original 1979 theatrical version "remains my version of choice".

And also the best cut of Aliens 3 is the 'Assembly Cut'

permalink

[-] WalterWasRight | 1 points | Sep 06 2017 09:33:11

Alien 1, 2,3, (4 if you want to, its shit and not linked to other movies)

Predator 1, Predator 2, Predators, Aliens vs Predator 1 & 2

Thanks! After AvP 1&2 do i watch Prometheus then Alien Covenant?

permalink

[-] WalterWasRight | 1 points | Sep 06 2017 13:05:34

Oh, forgot about those.

In fact, you should watch both of them first, before even starting Alien 1,2,3 etc.

First Prometheus and then Covenant.

permalink

[-] Joonmoy | 1 points | Sep 06 2017 15:07:02

I strongly disagree. They should not be watched at all, but especially not before the Alien movies.

permalink

[-] WalterWasRight | 2 points | Sep 06 2017 15:10:28

Its chronologically correct, what he/she wanted. Movie quality or content is another matter.

permalink

[-] Joonmoy | 1 points | Sep 06 2017 15:12:27

They asked for "best order to watch". Watching P & A:C before Alien is definitely not the best order to experience them.

permalink

[-] WalterWasRight | 2 points | Sep 06 2017 15:17:49

Well thats just your personal opinion man. Im just giving an order in which the person would understand the alien universe the best, not my personal favorite list of movies, that would be useless.

permalink

[-] Joonmoy | 1 points | Sep 06 2017 15:10:26

Personally, I'd say watch Alien and Aliens, and stop there if you don't have a high tolerance for flawed movies. Many of the sequels are uninspired schlock, and Prometheus and Alien: Covenant do their best to ruin the original Alien by providing a dull and unneeded backstory to explain away the wonderful mysteries of the original.

Can someone post a H265 version of Aliens that's around this sort of size/quality. Currently trying to download a JoyBell torrent of it but there are absolutely no seeders.

  1. The theatrical cut is far better than the director's cut
  2. The source is not 10bit so you probably fucked up several other things in the encode.

permalink

[-] ecchh | 4 points | Sep 06 2017 18:56:23

  1. Yeah well that's like your opinion man.jpg
  2. I didn't encode this
  3. We already went over this, 10bit encoding even on 8bit sources helps save bandwidth and reduces color banding at lower bitrates

I also have the director's cut, but not in x265, which is why this one went up. The torrent for the TC is dead, and the one I have is 15GB. You can find the theatrical cut elsewhere if you want it that badly.

[-] 12mo | 0 points | Sep 07 2017 23:22:09

10bit encoding even on 8bit sources helps save bandwidth

No it doesn't you retard. Using a newer codec saves bandwidth. If you use the same codec and just change the bit rate you will not save bandwidth.

You're retarded and you're spreading false information and badly-encoded content.

You can find the theatrical cut elsewhere if you want it that badly.

I have it, that doesn't mean your shitty encode (which you didn't encode) is any good, or that 10bit magically saves bandwidth.

Fucking retards.
