I'm no pro at the codec stuff, but x265 is basically the movie encoded with the H.265 codec. This movie is encoded with the h.264 codec. H.265 makes the movie much smaller with same quality video (though some people debate that).

He left out the part where hardware decoding takes more power and isn't natively supported by browsers or many devices. Also much of the x265/HEVC media available is just re-encodes of previously encoded x264 media (rather than being encoded from an original source such as Blu-ray), so there is generational quality loss.
