They took the names and the idea of a death note, and that's about it. Aside from that it' nothing like the anime.

I understand the hate this movie is getting; the anime/manga is undeniably waaaay better, but it's not THAT bad. It's not a substitute for the anime, but it does kind of scratch that Deathnote itch in a short amount of time. The characters and plot are different. If you're a hardcore Deathnote fan I can't recommend this movie in good faith without first recommending to have an open mind.

The story is different because it has to be to fit in a movie. The characters are different to fit the shorter story. Light and L are very noticeably less careful than in the show, so you miss out on the prolonged 'I know that you know that I know' game that happens and is hilarious in the anime. L is also much less mysterious while Light makes dumb (but realistic) decisions throughout the movie.

It's worth a watch at least. I went in thinking it would suck based on the trailer, so I tried to disconnect it from the original show and I didn't hate it. 7.4/10
