Wooo 8gigs!! Do you guys download files this big to keep on your HDD to stream to a media center or something? For me, the quality on some apps like terrarium is "good enough" to move away from that hoarding mentality.

I can understand buying the physical copy (Blu Ray) for you're fave titles for the extra bump in quality/extra features but now I'm even moving away from that. 2 out of the last 5 Blu rays I bought straight up don't work on my player, and some take multiple tries to read the disc. It's a joke.

The quality of an 8gb file is substantially and noticeably better than the quality of a 4gb file, especially on a higher quality display. That's the main reason for me anyway. I still usually settle for 4gb files just because at least it's not god awful like most files 2gb or under, and 8gb files add up quick on a 1tb SSD.

For new, digitally shot movies, I wouldn't say 8GB is substantially better than a 4GB release. For older, grainy films, it's much more noticeable. Stream releases like on Terrarium, OTOH, are mostly unwatchable.

I download it, watch it, then I remove it.

While technically I do plan on keeping the movies I download (vs just deleting them right after viewing) hence why I prefer to download the better looking version, the real reason is very simple and most likely universal: If you have a competent enough display then the low bitrate movies (such as Yify) will look vastly worse. So even if I wasn't trying to "hoard" as you put it, I would rather watch a movie looking amazing on the screen than subpar. Call me spoiled. But in all honesty, I would say spoiled is not even the case. I mean it's normal for people to seek the better quality. After all, who downloads dvd divx rips nowadays when you can get bluray rips.

unfortunately, for most people 720p is good enough. Which is why you don't see these files with huge numbers of seeders like you used to. To be clear, I'm not looking down on anybody for downloading these big files. I can understand wanting to have that tangible 'thing', whatever it is. I've got a hard drive full of musical rarities -mostly flac- that I shudder to imagine trying to track down today. With movies, though, for the most part, I feel good actually buying the ones I'm crazy about, and just streaming the rest.

it's the codec - i prefer mpc since the codec range is bigger and you can use smooth video project

Really. Are you using Windows Media Player ? And what else... When you browse with Edge you wonder why nothing works fine ? Move on to a bit more powerful tools. I forgot the more or less abandoned VLC Player. It was great when all was about codec packs. But now it's not really updated for a long while. I'd strongly advise PotPlayer. I tried it and never changed since then. Excellent player.
