I'm not sure you need those explanations to enjoy the movie though. I completely abstracted any allegorical interpretations, and found it deep on a human level.

Sometime critics try to shoehorn their own pet beliefs in movies, the result is invariably a waste of saliva.

Loved that movie. Watch it if you like Jake Gyllenhaal, the guy definitely knows how to act and always gives a great performance whatever he's playing. He takes risks and chooses a lot of uncommon movies, which is a breath of fresh air when you've had too much superheroes movies.
