Why are these files so big?
It's an hour long, how big do you think it should be? :p The file size could be a lot smaller if it was encoded differently, but the smaller the file size the worse quality it will be. So it's a tradeoff. Most people like good quality videos more than tiny videos.

I download 3 to 4 hour sporting events in 720 that are just fine to watch. Also I am mobile 1005 of the time so data is a big deal for me, as I am not wasting away in a stick house with a fiber cable running to it.
