Down below guys I will give you a a sample of my work that I do on my own project which can be found in full quality and size on dbproject.info | Megalinks MegaDB dbproject.info as you can see in the name of the video file .

Here you have 6 screenshots , also to keep the consistency of a better comparison ,I kept Dragon Box Z R2J at the same Upscale of the encode aka 960 x 720 .

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/211374

To be noted that no sharpening or noise removal was applied to preseve the data of the video intact .

Give it a check and let me know guys what you think about it .

First there was u/-Lousy, then there was u/DraginBallzJJ.

I would suggest maybe testing some noise reduction, I've no idea how this stuff works unfortunately but I would imagine it would look better in some areas and worse in others, fight scenes would probably benefit from the gritty look but I think the talking scenes where there's more still the fuzz stands out more to the viewer, great stuff though hope you continue!

i have tested this in the past and came to the conclusion to not do any compromisses when it comes to video SD footage , beside Level sets we have nothing close to Dragon Box , once we remove noise we remove details that at some point for an overall watch , there is more harm than good done when you DNR or sharpening .

With regards to noise reduction, this guy tailored these encodes to stay as true to the original as possible. The color correction he applies I'm sure has a reason to it, as does omitting noise reduction.

I would adjust the screenshot comparisons to be raw source resolution manually scaled up to 720x960 and then the actual final product upscale that you're working on. As it stands, it literally only looks like you bumped the contrast by 10% or so with no significant adjustment to quality whatsoever, but I'm sure that isn't the case.

I know it might be just a wierd preference of mine , i feel that the swap between 480 and 720 will only steal the attention from what i want to show . Nevertheless i will do some tommorow if needed . But i remember that i hate when i click from 1 picture to another to not be able to proper compare them because of the resolution difference .

Well, if you do end up taking the time to do so, it's not necessary to have two different resolutions in the comparisons really. Just snap a frame in the original then scale it 480->720p in Photoshop bilinearly (or whatever upscale mode video players default to) so that people can see the real-world quality improvement from player-upscaled 480p to manual upscaling via encoding.
