i might get a lot of stick for asking this but i hope someone can answer me . i was wondering if stuff will get taken down ( tv shows movies etc) if it is privately backed up on my mega account?.
i am running short of space i was thinking of uploading stuff onto mega, since my net speed is slow af i wanted to know if stuff gets taken down even if its privately backed up thanks!

It can if they(MEGA) terminate the file, yes. (not just the user who uploaded the original file).
Thing is this will mega realise I am putting up pirated stuff if it doesn't get a whole lot of traffic on the link which happens when the link is shared ?

Yeah they can track a certain file via hash. So if it gets reported, they will take it down. Obviously newer movies (Guardians of the Galaxy 2, etc) will get taken down quickly. The more popular the movie, the more likely it will go down.
But if you have a lowkey movie like 1989's 'Intruder', that file/link will probably be safe for much longer. Because it's not a popular movie and it's not getting shared around.

Yep.
I've uploaded things for my personal use, and they've been removed.

Fucking how ?
Recently MEGA wiped a large amount of content based on the hash of individual files. If you import or upload a file into your private space and it has the same hash as a publicly visible/linked file, there is a risk your private file will be deleted. I would recommend not importing it, but instead re-uploading a modified version of the file (e.g. zipping it along with an extra txt file or something) to cause it to have a different hash code.

So if I don't let anyone know the file's link then it's safe or what ? I have a lot of PSD file uploaded so I wonder if they'd delete it for any reason.
Even if you don't let anyone know the file link it might still be deleted. If someone shares a file which ends up being reported and eventually taken down, they may then delete other instances of the same file from their network. So if you have the exact same file uploaded, it can get taken down.
I don't see this happening for your personal PSD files though.

So they are more likely to take down other media ? Still, that's kinda bs that they just delete any file like that ( even if the service is free )

I have no idea lol. And it wasn't even a popular movie, it's an old ass Italian film most people have never heard of.

Ah yes, sorry. Compress it, not modify it.

Simply re-raring it as multiple archives works too. You just pick a different size than the original set.
Nothing is ever permanently safe on a file hosting service though, not unless it's one of those specifically intended to be used as offsite backup. Those don't allow link sharing and are therefore not targeted in copyright lawsuits. File sharing sites are never completely secure. They could change their policy and start deleting certain files, or they could be shut down anytime without warning for legal reasons.
I've occasionally had links just disappear for no apparent reason. Not the whole set, just one or two. So if you're using MEGA as a backup for your files, have other backups too.
