same here, with the Community Combined Codec Pack (CCCP), and x265 runs a treat on my middling PC

Is the experience really that much better than plain old mpc-hc? I'm pretty satisfied with that but I keep seeing about madvr...

From a mathematical standpoint, it is objectively superior. Up to the person whether they care for the improvement. Some of the highest quality settings will require heavy offloading to a graphics card though (but even modest rigs will show improvements).

Pot Player.

i'd give Soda Player a try. It does it's own decoding (like VLC), and can also stream to your chromecast devices.

Awesome! testing it out right now, amazing UI!

Update: I love it! It fits my needs, and most of all it play OPUS audio codec.

I've used potplayer for years and haven't had anything but good words to say about it.

[-] Aj-Mega | 1 points | May 01 2017 18:05:10

Are you using any codecs?

permalink

[-] Hoogyme | 4 points | May 01 2017 17:27:59

I would suggest staying with PotPlayer, it offers a lot of video decoding options. If you go to:

Preferences -> Filter Control -> Video Decoder -> Built-in codec/DXVA settings

you get a list of available video decoders you would like to use for specific codecs such as H.264/ACV1 and H.265/HEVC. I use GPU decoding (NVENC or Intel Quicksync), but system decoders as well as the built-in decoders are good options. You also have options for enabling DXVA and DXVA Copy-back.

I'm not sure what you mean by "crisp" video with VLC, but there are options in Potplayer for scaling and sharpening. Go to:

Preferences -> Video -> Scaler

I would suggest changing the default scaler from Auto to Lanczos.

I was referring to the rendering i guess. I played a Blu-Ray file in vlc and potplayer. .vlc gave more colors and plotplayer made the contrast brighter and a bit washed out, even tho the settings are all at default.

[-] Hoogyme | 5 points | May 01 2017 18:16:49

Sounds like a color space problem to me, but can't be 100% sure without an example or the source video. The Blu-Ray is most likely using a limited color space (16-235) and one player correctly converting the limited color space to full (0- 255) while the other player is interpreting it incorrectly.

Screenshots of vlc vs potplayer http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/208545 look at the neck and jacket, the jacket seems completely black in potplayer, but vlc shows details in the collar.

Maybe is is colorspace, how do i fix that?

[-] Hoogyme | 1 points | May 03 2017 16:51:37

In PotPlayer try going to:

Preferences -> Video

Check "Use 16~235 level output" and see if that changes anything.

Never had a problem with VLC.

permalink

[-] Aj-Mega | 2 points | May 01 2017 17:56:39

I never had problems, until recently when i skip forward x265 10bit files it stutters.

permalink

[-] rebel6784231 | 1 points | May 01 2017 18:37:39

Huh I've never experienced that.

[-] acr_vp | 3 points | May 01 2017 18:32:20

The biggest factor here is simply if you have a video card that will do hardware decoding of x265 like the current gen's do. I bought a $110 geforce 1080 and my cheapo HTPC can play anything now silky smooth.

I currently use VLC

GOM Player

BOMI Player

I use VLC with a custom skin. It's default skin is hideous.

permalink

[-] Aj-Mega | 1 points | May 01 2017 21:00:10

Bomi player is a GUI using mpv. mpv decodes with ffmpeg, so i might as well stick with potplayer which already includes ffmpeg

Cyberlink PowerDVD. Truly makes the image 'jump out' as compared to VLC or MPC. Tons of options.

permalink

[-] jodorowsthesky | 3 points | May 01 2017 22:04:18

PowerDVD uses a form of keyframe interpolation afaik. You can have the same or even better effect with mpc+svp and it is free

permalink

[-] Aj-Mega | 2 points | May 01 2017 20:50:54

Sadly it does NOT play OPUS Audio, and yes i have check on v17. The player and UI is nice, and i like the audio boost it gives with the simulated dd5.1 sound. Ill test it and see if i should refund it within the next 30 days.

permalink

[-] sandspiegel | 1 points | May 01 2017 19:33:02

You have to pay for Powerdvd where other video players like vlc or potplayer are freeware.

permalink

[-] Kulchamaster16lpm | 1 points | May 01 2017 19:35:07

Agreed. But once you start using it you'll figure out why it's paid and not free like the others.

KMPLAYER sexy n dark

[-] saintspidey67re | 2 points | May 02 2017 17:12:06

Better hardware guarantees nothing. My Day One Xbox One is less powerful than any of the machines you guys are talking about and plays every x265 video I've run though it.

I use kodi. I don't notice any negatives and I have a normal hp envy laptop running as my media center

permalink

[-] Aj-Mega | 1 points | May 02 2017 20:50:01

Kodi will be including DRM. Bad for users who backup there paid content or pirate. Google it if you dont know what that means.

permalink

[-] LlewelynMoss1 | 2 points | May 02 2017 21:02:33

Only for stuff like if they wanted to have Netflix on it. Not just as a media player as they don't provide content

I have everything running through Plex and it's perfect for me. Try adjusting sharpness in GOM if you feel the video is lacking it.

permalink

[-] Racer1959 | 1 points | May 01 2017 20:17:02

Plex through the Smart TV app on Samsung plays everything silky smooth - very rarely transcodes too.

I use WMP with ffdshow, matroskasplitter, ac3filter, icaros (for thumbnails), and directvob sub. Need to use codectweaktool to disable WMP own codecs to get mine working.

I use smplayer with mpv as backend. Give it a try.

permalink

[-] BetrayerOfBetrayers | 1 points | May 01 2017 19:04:24

mpv. Accept no substitutes.

permalink

[-] Aj-Mega | 1 points | May 01 2017 20:55:12

mpv uses ffmpeg decoder which potplayer now includes. so i might stick with potplayer, or soda player

The KMPlayer lets even me, with a laptop from 2006 watch 1080p 265, just with a bit of lag at action rich scenes.

It handles lag very well, when the image is behind, it will smoothly catch up when it's quiet again.

I recommend using the super or high speed mode. I think when starting first, color changing plugins are on, with this mode all will be deactivated.

The enhanced video renderer is not on by default, just activate it.

edit, nope, suck it kmplayer. Potplayer is da bomb, yo.
