First things first, i have a mid-high spec PC and Laptop, both clean installed with Window 10 Creator Update. x265 is my go too, and I have alot of videos using OPUS audio.
I use to use VLC, but skipping cause the video/audio to stutter or lag.
I used DivX, works fine but it doesn't play OPUS audio.
I have tried MPC-HC, but Opus audio lags randomly, or when i pause & resume it lags. (on both machines)
I am now using potplayer, it works perfectly so far but some video don't render as vlc does there are a bit more sharp.
I have test, mpv, gom, sm/km- player.. most uses ffmpeg which is already in potplayer
I attempted to use k-lite codec packs but i never see a difference, Maybe in configuring it incorrectly?? any guides?
Any suggestions? What player/configuration are you using?

PotPlayer all the way!
i'd give Soda Player a try. It does it's own decoding (like VLC), and can also stream to your chromecast devices.

I would suggest staying with PotPlayer, it offers a lot of video decoding options. If you go to:
Preferences -> Filter Control -> Video Decoder -> Built-in codec/DXVA settings
you get a list of available video decoders you would like to use for specific codecs such as H.264/ACV1 and H.265/HEVC. I use GPU decoding (NVENC or Intel Quicksync), but system decoders as well as the built-in decoders are good options. You also have options for enabling DXVA and DXVA Copy-back.
I'm not sure what you mean by "crisp" video with VLC, but there are options in Potplayer for scaling and sharpening. Go to:
Preferences -> Video -> Scaler
I would suggest changing the default scaler from Auto to Lanczos.
I was referring to the rendering i guess. I played a Blu-Ray file in vlc and potplayer. .vlc gave more colors and plotplayer made the contrast brighter and a bit washed out, even tho the settings are all at default.
Sounds like a color space problem to me, but can't be 100% sure without an example or the source video. The Blu-Ray is most likely using a limited color space (16-235) and one player correctly converting the limited color space to full (0- 255) while the other player is interpreting it incorrectly.
Screenshots of vlc vs potplayer http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/208545 look at the neck and jacket, the jacket seems completely black in potplayer, but vlc shows details in the collar.
Maybe is is colorspace, how do i fix that?

Never had a problem with VLC.
I never had problems, until recently when i skip forward x265 10bit files it stutters.
[-] rebel6784231 | 1 points
Huh I've never experienced that.
The biggest factor here is simply if you have a video card that will do hardware decoding of x265 like the current gen's do. I bought a $110 geforce 1080 and my cheapo HTPC can play anything now silky smooth.

If you have an alternative video player for mac too Id like to see alternatives.
I currently use VLC

Cyberlink PowerDVD. Truly makes the image 'jump out' as compared to VLC or MPC. Tons of options.

PowerDVD uses a form of keyframe interpolation afaik. You can have the same or even better effect with mpc+svp and it is free
Sadly it does NOT play OPUS Audio, and yes i have check on v17. The player and UI is nice, and i like the audio boost it gives with the simulated dd5.1 sound. Ill test it and see if i should refund it within the next 30 days.

You have to pay for Powerdvd where other video players like vlc or potplayer are freeware.
[-] Kulchamaster16lpm | 1 points
Agreed. But once you start using it you'll figure out why it's paid and not free like the others.

KMPLAYER sexy n dark

Better hardware guarantees nothing. My Day One Xbox One is less powerful than any of the machines you guys are talking about and plays every x265 video I've run though it.

I use kodi. I don't notice any negatives and I have a normal hp envy laptop running as my media center
Kodi will be including DRM. Bad for users who backup there paid content or pirate. Google it if you dont know what that means.
[-] LlewelynMoss1 | 2 points
Only for stuff like if they wanted to have Netflix on it. Not just as a media player as they don't provide content

I like BS Player (real name, no kidding). No idea if it lines up with your specs, but it's worth looking into.

The KMPlayer lets even me, with a laptop from 2006 watch 1080p 265, just with a bit of lag at action rich scenes.
It handles lag very well, when the image is behind, it will smoothly catch up when it's quiet again.
I recommend using the super or high speed mode. I think when starting first, color changing plugins are on, with this mode all will be deactivated.
The enhanced video renderer is not on by default, just activate it.
edit, nope, suck it kmplayer. Potplayer is da bomb, yo.

there's a 64 bit build somewhere in the thread. it's not an official release but some user compiled it.

Is the experience really that much better than plain old mpc-hc? I'm pretty satisfied with that but I keep seeing about madvr...

From a mathematical standpoint, it is objectively superior. Up to the person whether they care for the improvement. Some of the highest quality settings will require heavy offloading to a graphics card though (but even modest rigs will show improvements).
