Since you're discussing variations, there's also OpenRCT, which is a rewrite of the code of RollerCoasterTycoon to allow it to run on a modern computer system. Also has small improvements to the original game but mostly just maintains the game on newer machines.

To play it, you will need to install RCT2. Then you start OpenRCT and it will ask for the location of the install.
