I think they're so new that they don't know what those letters mean.
So, /u/jmac91 , here's the gist as far as I understand it. When they said "standard def encode of the WEB-DL" that means rather than the full 1080p resolution (or close enough) of what the itunes download would be, this version is "standard def" which tends to be what's used for those older tvs, more convenient for 480p. Real HD it 1920x1080, and a version of HD is also 1280x720, but "standard" is a step below that, wherein the height is usually 480. This version uploaded here it should be around 720x480, I believe. (less than 480, actually, because of the aspect ratio).
So, it should be noted that, with these uploads, they tend to be a little less than the stated "1080" because most modern movies are actually wider than 1920x1080 and 1280x720 resolutions ^edit and aspect ratios, which are standard for home televisions and monitors, but not the big screen cinema. So, because of the nature of fitting movies (which are wider than home TVs) to fit on a home monitor, the black bars make the height actually less than the stated height.
Someone fill me in or correct me if I'm wrong.
