I remember watching the Not Quite Human movies as well growing up, about an android trying to fit in with humans.
Also for some reason that reminds me of Frog too. Not as tech-related but it's got the cheesy 80s movie factor. Plus Paul Williams talking and singing in a bad Italian accent haha

I absolutely fucking love this movie - the soundtrack is amazing as well. One day we'll see an HD version, hopefully.
