[META] Could we interoduce Online/Offline Flair? | Megalinks MegaDB [META] Could we interoduce Online/Offline Flair?

Since archived posts cannot be commented on I was thinking about how we could mark old posts as offline so people don't have to work through 20 results in their search. For example most of old posts are offline, but I found a 6 months old result for "Big Trouble in Little China" which is still online.

So my idea was: Users can report posts as "offline" in the "other" category and the admins could flag them as being offline. What do you think? Too much hassle for the admins?

E: *introduce, dammit

Mods have access to a dead link flair but I dont have the time to check all the posts, I would however mark them dead as you guys find them, just pm me the link, or /u/vcdupper dead link in a comment of the post.

content posters should have access to this, would alleviate half the headache of mods having to flair the posts of already active posters.

And that would also give the same power to assholes who download everything just for fun, they would mark links dead that aren't, for the 100th time just send me the URL in a pm and I'll take care of it, or should I say it again?

Just get some more low level mods who can help you with this (this isn't an application from me, I don't have time either^^).

A mod is a mod is a mod here u get all the power, I have NP marking them as users find them,I could do it daily.

This sounds like a job for a bot. Is anyone aware of such a bot which would mark the link as dead if someone creates a comment like 'DEAD LINK'? This would allow for users to add the comment and the bot to add the flair and then presumably the moderators would not have to do anything other than set it up.

for 6-month old archived posts, comments wouldn't work, but it looks like you can do add an option to the "report" feature for dead links.

Sounds good, where can I add that to reports?

Essentially you would make a rule specifically for dead links. Then people could report it as a dead link, which would show up in the mod's inbox.

I've never experimented with /r/AutoModerator/, but it does look you can take actions on report_reason and set_flair is something it does.

EDIT: I should say that just setting the rule and maybe mentioning it in the sidebar would be a good start. See how many reports you get and decide if it's worth automating.

Automation might not be the best Idea. To easy to abuse.

Ah I see. Such a plan would not work at all without the ability to comment on archived posts.

That's the problem, users can't write comments on archived (>6 months old) posts.

Ok. So, that idea is dead.

I was suggesting a solution where users mark links as dead, not the bot. So any possible variation on how the url is assembled would not matter, provided a user can go there and see that what was linked to is no more. But we cannot comment on old threads so we can't mark them as dead as easily.
