Right now I am running most of my content in x264 format. Actually, all of it because my computer (server) blatantly tells me that it cannot decode and play x265 ( over Plex). Since a lot of content is starting to get distributed on here via x265, I'd like to get on board. Can you guys who use x265 please share your specs? I'd like to get something I can use.

x265 has drastically increased quality at extremely low bitrates vs x264 which has led to a lot of people overestimating it and releasing supremely bitrate-starved content. x265 is typically around 40% more efficient but you've got all these x265 reencodes of x264 releases with less than half the bitrate of the original and it just really sucks. right now I think the lack of quality x265 releases is a combination of the extreme encoding requirements, lack of compatibility, and general ignorance/unfamiliarity.

yeah was about to say 265 for me has been better and is usually a lot smaller
265 is a tweaked format that creates more problems than it has solved. a 10 year old laptop can handle x264 but a 4 year old laptop can't handle x265. For fuck's sake, let's just have a standard format

a 4 year old laptop can't handle x265
Is it an Atom based laptop? I have an 8-year old Core2 laptop that plays x265 files just fine.

I think 264 is more popular especially for nice looking shows like Game of Thrones because there's a demand for being able to watch pirated content on your TV. Many TVs are 265 compatible, but not all are, even if they're 4k or higher, so people who are knowledgeable about video encoding are going to go looking for 264 if they know that 265 is a problem for them.

I plug my laptop in to my TV for 265 content and it works fine too, but some people can't do that and media sharing isn't always reliable. It's easier to put it on a usb for me personally; it just depends on the setup the user has.
I think your points are valid. I can only speak for me, but I seek out x264 for compatibility with stuff other than my 4K TV, so that hopefully transcoding won't be necessary. Mobile devices and
I personally make an exception for 4k content, as it's likely for 4k devices to have HEVC support... I seek out and prefer 4k content (and only 4k content!) in HEVC/x265.
I'd hang on a bit. In a few months, AV1 is going to be finalized, and that's really gonna be "the" go to high efficiency codec.
AV1 is vastly better performing on playback than H265, better compression, the whole kit and caboodle. With all the major browsers, media delivery, and operating systems building in support, it's gonna be the go to and H265 will fade into obscurity, mark my words. (Google, Microsoft, AMD, nVidia, YouTube, Netflix, Amazon, Cisco, etc are all on board.)
If you're trying to upgrade your library or save some space, just wait a little bit. AV1 is gonna blow up in the scene and your box will most likely be able to transcode it if necessary. (Though it should decode fine on 5+ year old Android devices, so you probably won't need transcoding.)
Then again.... If you need an excuse to get a new toy.... go buy a new toy!
AV1 bitstream format may get locked down in the next few months or so, but it's miles away from being "vastly better performing on playback than H265, better compression".

I wish uploaders would make it clearer which is which. None of my players will play x265 content so I like to avoid it.
But sometimes I don't know what it is until i've already downloaded it.
Just convert it. Vidcoder works great to change x265 to x264. None of the devices I watch on support x265 so whenever I can only find something in that I grab it and reencode.
i've never seen a release where the format wasn't made abundantly clear.

i don't really download anything from here, my bad. posts like those are why; why the fuck would you download anything with bitrates that horribly low let alone even click on them?
Deflection much? You asked for examples and were given three, but instead of eating humble pie, you wanna try and wriggle out of the fact that your statement was total bullshit. X265 are the devil's spawn and should be avoided like the plague.
We always do it's either in the title or at the far right of the title called a flair
[-] I_cant_talk | 3 points
As shown in the examples i posted not everyone does it.
We have 26,607 members, good luck getting that many people to do what you want.
[-] I_cant_talk | 3 points
The mod could add the flair on all the posts without one
Ok so we have 2 active mods & 26,614 members, so we are supposed to download every file that someone posts without the quality posted and see what it is then let you know? Sure ok i'll stop my whole life & do that to make yours easier, or you could use megasync & stream the file and find out for yourself what it is in about 1 minute then decide if you wanna download it or not, this isn't a perfect world & expecting EVERYONE to do what we want is not realistic. Would you also have us ban members next for not flairing their posts?
Imagine there is no flair. Then there are 26614 members that each have to download the file and check, if it is the right file. And if it is not the right file download another one. Can MEGA handle the traffic caused by 26614 members checking the file format?
Would you also have us ban members next for not flairing their posts?
You said that, not me
But it is a nice idea
Try [MPC-HC] (https://mpc-hc.org/downloads/)
If that doesn't work it's time to upgrade

Oh they play fine on my pc. Im talking about rasplex and my smart tv.
Oh sorry
[-] I_cant_talk | 2 points
You're forgiven ;)
I bought a wetek hub to be able to play x265 via Kodi through my TV. All my files sit on a very old desktop PC and get streamed to the hub.
I originally used my blu-ray player to stream downloaded stuff but it wouldn't touch x265. I prefer the x265 format for its smaller download size. I buy the stuff I really like on Blu Ray anyway as I want to have the best possible quality for that media, as well as ensuring that my support is shown for movies and TV shows that I want to see more of.

I use Plex to stream to either Chromecast 1, or Roku 3, and my setup can't transcode 265 to 264 on the fly.
[-] R3a1ityCheque | 2 points
I have an Nvidia Shield TV streaming x265 content over my powerline plugs from a home server (RPi) and it still hitches and buffers the odd time. Some files work fine, others not so much. So the bulk of what I use is still x264.
If you're using a Mac/PC as your Plex client, are you using Plex Media Player, or just logging into Plex using your web browser?

For movies I use jyk h264 encodes rest all TV shows h265

I use a system with a G3258 CPU as my server with x265 content and can do two 1080p streams without hiccups so for about the last year I've been getting all of my TV shows in x265 to save space as I don't notice much difference in quality.

I really rec http://www.universalmediaserver.com/ - to everyone. You're unlikely to ever encounter unplayable files.
I use an MXQ Pro 4k for playback which is perfectly fine for HEVC x265 in 4k res at 10bit. I just flashed OpenElec on it instead of the preinstalled android since it supports a lot smoother playback. Also I only download Remux versions (usually 20-50GB / 1080p / 7.1 DTS) of movies and encode them myself to 1080p 5.1 DDSound HEVC mkv. They have around 5-10 GB afterwards and I store the on my external 5TB Harddrive which is connected via usb to the mxq pro.

x265 All day long. I watch on MPV player and Plex with no problems and the quality if done by the proper encoders is Phenomenal compared to the blocky x264 codec. Everybody do a search for the FREE MPV player it plays everything you throw at it and there's Portable build too. I dropped VLC player started getting a little bloated for me. I have spoken to some uploaders here and appreciate all the x265 they throw our way. I just wish the scene would demand better of groups with subpar releases of x265 and yes they are out there. You need to experiment with a few groups and you will see who the elite releases are from.
I have a hp/voodoo firebird from 2008 playing high bitrate .265 over network with 0 problems. I have no idea why people are having trouble with anything other than encoding .265.

x265 gets my vote. 720p small & decent hd quality espicaly since most people have data-caps. Forget those losers who are trying to play movies on their consoles & smart-tvs. Get a PC or laptop..HTPC

My PleX server is a Pentium G3258 at 4.2Ghz.
I can get one 1080p HEVC transcode out of it no prob and some times 2 depending on the show.

I3-4130, 1060 gtx, 8gb ram. I use it to stream to my nexus 6p, Xbox one, and 4k Vizio over wireless.
Can handle 4k hevc.
