x265 creates smaller files, with generally worse compression than x264, and plays on nearly nothing. x264 plays on everything and can have great compression, but slightly larger file sizes. avi is a nearly thirty year old codec with horrific compression and huge file sizes for the quality and for some reason European films and the earliest scene releases are always put out in this horrible format.

One small correction, AVI was never a codec, it has always been a container, the same as matroska (MKV). It is just a file type, that can be one of several different codecs. The early years of Windows/AVIs were a nightmare of installing "codec packs" to try and play AVIs. If memory serves, the original AVIs were mostly INDEO, Motion JPEG, Cinepak, and RealVideo (Thank god Real died).

Correction accepted. But I still find it infuriating that most of the best rare content, smaller and/or older foreign films, can only be found in garbage, blocky, low res avi lumps that look like trash on a phone sized screen and are impossible to watch on a tv. I've gone to ridiculous lengths cleaning some of these rips up in premiere and final cut, with red giant plugins etc. and it's just impossible to make them look any better than barely tolerable. It boggles me as to why there's still a section of the scene putting stuff out like this. Completely agree that Real Video and Audio were the absolute worst. And I could never tell which of those files required an internet connection to stream the content and which ones were the actual content.

I love the 1080 Remaster, but the german audio I already have is from another source than the NTSC DVD that the Remaster has, so its asynchronous, which is why I'd like the german DVD (or one with a german audio stream) and apply the filters myself.
