Lots of H265 here lately, but my stuff only plays 264.

Same here. And converting takes hours...

Have you tried playing with VLC? It plays 265 beautifully. I use it exclusively.

I stream from Plex to tv or projector using Roku or Chromecast.

Get yourself a FireTV and you won't need to convert ;)

Don't care for Amazon's dislike of Google.

No, but I find it's great for powerslides ;)

:) You have me by two decades friend. What vehicle was kind enough to show you such fun?! I will never forget the first "pony car" that 'drifted' (kiddy lingo for sure!) wicked through mountain foothills. [left foot + right foot + FEEL + thought + thousands of hours under a hood = great time] [now = computers, computers, computers = rich kids not knowing a damn thing + losing on the track]

I don't foresee Handbrake nor any other transcoder work well with this type of conversion without issues.

If you're hoping to convert x/h264 to x/h265 AND especially 265 to 264, you're going to lose a lot of quality, particularly if you're hoping to convert from one resolution to the same resolution. You might get away with say converting x264 1080p down to x265 720p though.

The best use for x265 and h265 right now is ripping or transcoding directly from source or the closest to source available.

Same problem in either direction. You're going to lose a ton of quality moving from x265s extreme compression to x264's compression.

You could still do it if quality's not an issue. Handbrake is the best option with a ready to role GUI and presets. There are some other command line tools but probably too fiddly to work with. If you're using Plex server, it's able to transcode on the fly from what i've seen :)

Not H265. At least not going to Chromecast 1gen or Roku 3.
