Last week MEGA conducted a large sweep where a lot of uploaders had their accounts suspended causing them to lose terabytes worth of uploaded content. Even posts that were just hours old were having their content wiped from MEGA. One theory is that since the keys and direct links to the files were being posted openly in a thread, bots or people working for MEGA were easily able to come in and get the offending URL. Putting the key behind a CAPTCHA helps to at least keep the bots from getting the link which in turn should keep the upload alive for a longer amount of time.

It does violate Rule: 1, but until a better solution is decided upon the mods seem to be allowing third party linking sites for now.

MEGA has been taking down a lot of accounts lately. The subreddit as a whole is trying to be smarter and safer about posting links. The added step makes it just a bit harder for bots/whoever to sift through links and close down accounts.

When you post the direct link with the full URL it makes it easier to detect by people who take down/remove content. Hence the concealed way to protect the link to the file. Go through r/megalinks and you will rarely find any URL link directly shown they way you posted it.
