I can second that. I stopped watching at the end of season 2 but sort of kind of got back into it mid-way through season 6. Saw the first episode of season 7 and said to myself that I just didn't want to watch such a miserable show anymore. Having said that, I appreciate that others enjoy it.

Last season was pretty bad as well. The dumpster fake-out, the Morgan episode, lots of filler and weird cliffhangers followed by a blue balls episode about something else...lots of brooding silence.

For a show with 16 eps, they're spreading stuff pretty thin. Also, I know it follows the comics somewhat, but it feels like it was lazily written and directed, characters making really dumb decisions(in this they could improve by better lead up's that frame it much better as the only option to be made). In a nutshell, they're not fleshing it out enough, just kinda winging it putting the comic directly on the screen. Comics have a tendency to not really have a lot of substance and the writers/directors for the show aren't filling in the gaps as well as they used to, and it seems to be getting worse, almost by the episode. Not to say there aren't well done episodes here and there, it's just that so few are.

I can see some of this for the older standard of 22-24 episode seasons for tv shows where there's a bit of time to play with, you can move at a more leisurely pace, but with the reduced modern seasons, it's like they took away the meat and left more of the fat.

These reasons and more I'm sure(don't want to get into spoilers, certainly over the first episode this season) are why the show is losing it's charm(if you want to call zombie/drama "charming") to a lot of previously faithful viewers.
