Not really, right now 4K Bluray rip is directly recorded via the HDMI output of the 4K Bluray player. The signal chain is digital throughout and there's no quality loss.

damn i never knew this. i always thought these 4k files were upscaled from a regular bluray. So this is native 4k?

It depends on how you define "native 4K". This particular film was shot on 35mm film and digitally finished in 2K resolution, the 4K UHD Bluray here was mastered from 2K source. It looks significantly better than regular 1080p Bluray but not technically 4K native resolution.

yes, i worded that wrong. I meant to ask if these are from UHD or upscaled from 1080p blurays. I've seen other files listed as 4k hevc 10bit (released by joy), but those files are under 10gb, so i am unsure if the low size is due to HEVC, or if they are upscaled from 1080p sources.

Regular x264 1080p Bluray rip is ~8Mbps compared to ~40Mbps of the original disc. With strict encoding parameters (there are scene release rules), there is very little loss in perceptual quality. With x265 release, they are able to achieve less than 20% of the original disc size and still maintain good image quality due to HEVC. This particular one is a 1:1 rip of the disc.

Thank you Luke. Have you had any experience with the hevc rips released by joy? It also says it is 2160p with 10bit, but there is never a nfo file, so i have no clue what the source was.

Usually the source is specified in the title, it would say "Bluray" or "Web". Joy releases are excellent in terms of encoding quality and file size.
