i honestly have no idea. the only films i've seen in x265 at 4K res are the martian, mad max fury road, and this one, and not a single one of them is actually 4K. the actual files' widths are 3840 (i think vert is 1600 on all of them but some might be different aspect ratio, can't remember) so i don't think it really matters that they're not real 4K in terms of compression. the first two i downloaded are over 50 GB in size so obviously there's no problem with compression there, but i watch this one and honestly even when i pause it on scenes that should be hard to compress without artifacts, the artifacts that are there are quite hard to notice. technically this film should really be 4K as it was filmed on 35 mm, but it definitely isn't. lost, which i've been watching recently, looks more detailed than this does. but yeah for your actual question i don't think it is terribly compressed. i think it looks ok, just kind of blurry, but that is almost certainly just the film. i have two seasons of house of cards in 4K x265 from joy at only ~1.5 GB per episode and it looks very good, some artifacting in dark scenes. comparison screencaps:

i wrote a long comment before this one talking about my experiences with x265 and x264 at different bitrates but really there are just so many variables, even the framework coding of x265 itself is variable between two points in time because the devs continue to improve upon it. it's too difficult to come up with specific numbers and whatnot, but what i'm certain of is that x265 IS better than x264, how much better at x resolution, y framerate, and z bitrate is another matter; and also that x265 is MUCH better at obscenely low bitrates so it's a huge step forward for people with bad internet. sorry for ramble.

3840 width is the "Ultra HD" standard whatever that means, as for the height you should check some 1080p movies and see how few of them really are 1080 pixel high. The top and bottom often gets cut off because they have a wider aspect ratio than 16:9.

that's not what i was saying. they aren't 4K because either the film scans aren't 4K or they were filmed somewhere between 2K and 3K digitally.

Thank you, I love when people upload 2160p x265, can confirm that this looks good. However, for those people asking because it is an old film no matter how good the encoding quality is, it can never look as good as newer films. I personally prefer 6gb+ encodes for films, but because it is old (1997) the difference isn't as noticeable anyway.
