[QUESTION] When are we going private?

Trust me it's something that needs to be done, but the second we flip the switch that changes the site settings to only approved members can view and submit, meaning we and by we I pretty much mean me & /u/indigo6alpha & maybe /u/West_Garden because I have never seen any other mods here, would have to go through currently 15,104 members and make you all approved submitters, hence the dilemma, who has the time for that. I'm open to suggestions.

Long time lurker. Private comes with it's caveats, and would certainly reduce the quantity of the thread. It would need to be managed considerably by many active mods to work properly.

I support what ever option you choose. I am not active enough to have an opinion.

I think that posting on the subreddit won't bring any problems. What could happen is that someone sees how popular the subreddit is, checks to see who is uploading the content that is posted on the subreddit, and then going after them. Since many of our users upload content themselves, that's when we could start to be targeted.

We could make the subreddit private but we wouldn't be able to know if any of the approved users had motives like what I posted above and it would make the whole thing pointless.

We also then have to look into how we could increase our userbase with active recruiting but that takes a lot of work. There are only two moderators (I don't count) who are active and it would be a lot of work to maintain a private subreddit. We would need help.

Option 1) Acquire more mods who like to help out (e.g.: me) to help filtering 15k people. Just because it says 15k subscribers doesn't mean all of them want to stay here. Account age > 30 or via Invites.

Option 2) Keep it as is and change some rules for Requests and Submits. Tags, Titles, how the Keys are stored.

If possible, running a script to automate updating the Approved Submitter's list would seem optimal.

I did a brief Google search , and while I found references saying it could be done, and that there is a scripting subreddit that takes requests, I haven't found anything more concrete as of yet...

Honestly, if you need help setup a group of temp mods that can help you go through the process and then change their accounts back to regular users, assuming you can do this, I have never been a mod before. I am sure that you can get enough volunteers to make it not completely suck.

One thing I've seen done is to create a second subreddit where folks who want to join show they are "worthy" (can discuss like adults, understand how to share links without self-promoting, etc), and then the mods there can kick up recommendations to y'all from the public subreddit. So the public one can have a decent number of mods, while the private one has just a few. Yes, it would be slower for folks to get in, but that might make it "better" for folks who get there.

The possibly simpler route is to do a "Lounge" and require that folks show they have given at least a month of reddit gold. Folks who have literally paid to help keep the service going are usually less likely to pollute their own homes.

vcdupper and the other mods do a good job with clearly stating how this sub runs. I'm sure the mods will state how to request access. I don't think a chorus of "me too" on every post about this topic is an effective way of securing a spot. Have faith in the mods, we'll all know what it takes to get access before it goes private.

Edit: One more thought, let's be less worried about individually securing a spot and more worried about how to effectively get access to all who want it. vcdupper et. al have quite a challenging problem and could use help from the community.
